Consider a mug whose cross-sectional area varies with height&#8212;it is wider at the bottom and top and narrower in the middle.When coffee is poured into this mug at a constant volumetric rate, the coffee level rises over time. The rate of this rise is inversely related to the cross-sectional area at that height.The concavity of the curve depends on the sign of the second derivative of height with respect to time.In the lower half of the mug, the cross-sectional area changes in a way that causes the height to accelerate. Because the height of the liquid accelerates, the second derivative is positive in this region, resulting in a concave-up curve.On the other hand, cross-sectional area increases in the upper-half, and shows the opposite effect, height decelerates, meaning the second derivative is negative, and corresponds to a concave down region on the graph.Inflection points mark where concavity changes.In this example, the inflection point is located near the middle of the mug, where the cross-sectional area is minimum. So, the acceleration of height represented by its second derivative has decreased to zero following its passage from positive to negative values.

The second derivative test helps classify critical points of a function. Critical points are places where the first derivative is zero or undefined. They are possible locations for local maxima and local minima, but they do not always become one or the other.

The second derivative shows concavity, or whether a graph bends up or down. If f''(x) &gt; 0, the function is concave up, and the critical point is a local minimum. If f''(x) &lt; 0, the function is concave down, and the critical point is a local maximum.

If f''(x) = 0, the test does not give a clear answer. In that case, another method, such as the First Derivative Test, must be used. The second derivative can also help identify an inflection point, which is where the concavity changes sign.

The example in the transcript begins by finding the first derivative and setting f'(x) = 0. This gives the critical points x = 0 and x = 2. Then the second derivative is checked at each point. Since f''(0) = -6, x = 0 is a local maximum. Since f''(2) = 6, x = 2 is a local minimum.

The same example also shows an inflection point. Setting f''(x) = 0 gives x = 1. Because the second derivative changes sign at x = 1, that point is an inflection point. This process shows how the second derivative test reveals key features of a graph.
