Ośrodkowy układ nerwowy lub OUN zawiera różne komórki glejowe. Największym i najliczniejszym typem są astrocyty. Komórki te pełnią wiele funkcji, z których jedną jest pomoc w utrzymaniu bariery krew-mózg.

Inny rodzaj, oligodendrocyty, z mniejszymi ciałami komórkowymi i mniejszą liczbą procesów, tworzy osłonki mielinowe wzdłuż aksonów.

Najmniej liczne i najmniejsze komórki, mikroglej, biorą udział w procesach fagocytarnych, pochłaniając patogeny i szczątki komórkowe.

Ponadto obwodowy układ nerwowy lub PNS obejmuje komórki satelitarne, które otaczają ciała komórek neuronów i działają jak astrocyty znajdujące się w OUN. Podobnie komórki Schwanna to komórki, które działają jak oligodendrocyty, pomagając w tworzeniu osłonek wokół aksonów obwodowych. Komórki glejowe to jeden z dwóch głównych typów komórek układu nerwowego. Komórki glejowe obejmują astrocyty, oligodendrocyty, mikroglej i komórki wyściółki w ośrodkowym układzie nerwowym oraz komórki satelitarne i komórki Schwanna w obwodowym układzie nerwowym. Komórki te nie komunikują się za pomocą sygnałów elektrycznych jak neurony, ale przyczyniają się do praktycznie każdego innego aspektu funkcjonowania układu nerwowego. U ludzi liczba komórek glejowych jest mniej więcej równa liczbie neuronów w mózgu.

<h4>Komórki glejowe centralnego układu nerwowego</h4>

Glej w ośrodkowym układzie nerwowym (OUN) obejmuje astrocyty, oligodendrocyty, mikroglej i komórki wyściółki. Astrocyty są najliczniejszym typem komórek glejowych i występują w zorganizowanych, nie nakładających się wzorach w całym mózgu, gdzie ściśle łączą się z neuronami i naczyniami włosowatymi. Astrocyty odgrywają wiele ról w funkcjonowaniu mózgu, w tym regulują przepływ krwi i procesy metaboliczne, homeostazę jonów synaptycznych i pH oraz utrzymanie bariery krew-mózg.

Inna wyspecjalizowana komórka glejowa, oligodendrocyt, tworzy osłonkę mielinową otaczającą aksony neuronalne w OUN. Oligodendrocyty rozciągają długie procesy komórkowe, które wielokrotnie owijają się wokół aksonów, tworząc tę powłokę. Osłonka mielinowa jest wymagana do prawidłowego przewodzenia sygnalizacji neuronalnej i znacznie zwiększa prędkość przemieszczania się tych wiadomości.

Mikroglej,—zwany makrofagami OUN—to najmniejszy typ komórek glejowych, specjalizujący się w fagocytozie zarówno patogenów, jak i resztek. Chronią OUN przed czynnikami zakaźnymi i toksynami oraz przycinają synapsy w trakcie rozwoju. Chociaż mikroglej uważa się za komórki glejowe, mają one unikalne i odrębne pochodzenie w porównaniu z innymi typami komórek glejowych. Astrocyty i oligodendrocyty są wytwarzane przez glej promieniowy, podczas gdy mikroglej pochodzi z woreczka żółtkowego i migruje do zarodka na początku rozwoju embrionalnego.

I wreszcie komórki wyściółki to komórki w kształcie sześcianu z wypustkami przypominającymi rzęski, które wyściełają komory, gdzie wytwarzają płyn mózgowo-rdzeniowy (CSF). Komórki wyściółki tworzą barierę między mózgiem a płynem mózgowo-rdzeniowym, odfiltrowując potencjalnie szkodliwe substancje. Inna komórka glejowa PNS, komórka Schwanna, działa jak oligodendrocyty OUN, tworząc osłonkę mielinową wokół aksonów neuronów. Podobnie jak mielinizacja w OUN, mielinizacja aksonów PNS zapewnia niezbędną izolację i przewodnictwo dla prawidłowej transmisji sygnałów elektrycznych.

<h4>Znaczenie glejów dla zdrowia i chorób</h4>

Komórki glejowe odgrywają kluczową rolę w ochronie i regulatorach układu nerwowego. Nie tylko utrzymują warunki homeostatyczne i przyczyniają się do rutynowego funkcjonowania mózgu, ale także reagują na uszkodzenia, infekcje i choroby układu nerwowego. Ponadto glej pełni krytyczne funkcje podczas embrionalnego rozwoju układu nerwowego. Komórki te przyczyniają się nawet do usuwania niepotrzebnych połączeń neuronowych w procesie zwanym przycinaniem synaptycznym. Ze względu na znaczenie glejów w wielu aspektach funkcjonowania mózgu, defekty w jednej lub większej liczbie populacji komórek glejowych mogą prowadzić do poważnych i wyniszczających schorzeń neurologicznych, w tym zaburzeń rozwojowych, choroby Alzheimera, choroby Parkinsona, stwardnienia rozsianego i wielu innych.

W trakcie rozwoju komórki glejowe stanowią rusztowanie, na którym neurony mogą prawidłowo migrować i rozwijać swoje aksony. W późniejszym życiu urazy lub choroby neurodegeneracyjne mogą powodować utratę połączeń neuronowych, których nie można zregenerować, co prowadzi do upośledzenia funkcjonowania lub paraliżu.

Glial cells support the nervous system and work alongside neurons. They are one of the two main cell types in the nervous system. Unlike neurons, glia do not send electrical signals, but they help with nearly every other part of nervous system function. In humans, glial cells are about as numerous as neurons in the brain.

In the central nervous system, glia include astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, and ependymal cells. Astrocytes are the most common glial cells. They form organized, non-overlapping patterns in the brain and stay close to neurons and capillaries. They help regulate blood flow, support metabolism, maintain ion and pH balance around synapses, and help maintain the blood-brain barrier.

Oligodendrocytes make the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. This sheath wraps around neuronal axons many times and acts as insulation. Myelin helps nerve signals travel correctly and much faster. Microglia are the smallest glial cells and are known as the macrophages of the CNS. They remove pathogens and debris by phagocytosis and also help prune synapses during development. Unlike other glia, microglia come from the yolk sac and enter the embryo early in development.

Ependymal cells are cube-shaped cells with cilia-like projections that line the ventricles. They produce cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF, and form a barrier between the brain and the CSF. This barrier helps filter out harmful substances. Like astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, ependymal cells come from radial glia near the lateral ventricles.

The peripheral nervous system also has glial cells. Satellite cells support the neuronal cell bodies they surround by providing structure, cushioning, and nutrients. Schwann cells do for peripheral axons what oligodendrocytes do in the CNS. They form myelin around axons and help insulation and conductivity for electrical signaling.

Glia are important for health, development, and disease. They protect the nervous system, keep internal conditions stable, and respond to injury, infection, and disease. They also help guide neuron migration and axon growth during embryonic development. Because they help remove extra neuronal connections through synaptic pruning, problems in glial cells can contribute to developmental disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and other serious conditions. Damage later in life can also lead to lost connections that are difficult or impossible to replace, which may cause impaired function or paralysis.
