Badania nad pojedynczymi genami przyniosły niezwykłe spostrzeżenia na temat niemal wszystkich aspektów biologii, począwszy od chorób i dziedziczności, a skończywszy na rolnictwie i ewolucji. Jednak na wiele pytań dotyczących tego, jak działają i ewoluują geny, można odpowiedzieć tylko poprzez badanie całego DNA organizmu – jego genomu – razem jako całości.
Badanie kompletnych genomów jest znane jako genomika. Polega na sekwencjonowaniu całych genomów w celu zbadania ich organizacji, funkcji, regulacji i ewolucji. Genomika znajduje się na przecięciu genetyki, biologii molekularnej i nauk obliczeniowych.
Po zidentyfikowaniu struktury DNA w 1953 roku naukowcy zaczęli opracowywać techniki sekwencjonowania pojedynczych genów. Ważny przełom w sekwencjonowaniu DNA nastąpił w 1977 roku, kiedy Frederick Sanger opracował metodę pozwalającą na sekwencjonowanie całych genomów. Doprowadziło to do sekwencjonowania genomów drożdży piekarskich i muszki owocowej przy użyciu metody sekwencjonowania typu shotgun.  
Projekt Poznania Ludzkiego Genomu, który rozpoczął się w 1990 roku, był 13-letnim międzynarodowym przedsięwzięciem o wartości 2,7 miliarda dolarów, w ramach którego udało się zsekwencjonować pierwszy ludzki genom w 2003 roku. Sukces tego projektu doprowadził do innowacji w technologiach sekwencjonowania, a ludzkie genomy można teraz sekwencjonować w ciągu jednego dnia za mniej niż tysiąc dolarów. 
Duże ilości generowanych danych doprowadziły do powstania dziedziny bioinformatyki, która łączy techniki matematyczne i informatyczne w celu organizowania, analizowania i porównywania ogromnych ilości danych genomicznych. 
Genomika jest obecnie centralnym elementem medycyny spersonalizowanej, na przykład w leczeniu raka, i nadal odgrywa kluczową rolę w takich dziedzinach jak antropologia, ewolucja, kryminalistyka i rolnictwo.

Genomics

Genomika to nauka o genomach: to badanie całego materiału genetycznego organizmu. U człowieka genom składa się z informacji zawartej w 23 parach chromosomów w jądrze oraz mitochondrialnego DNA. W genomice sekwencjonuje się i analizuje zarówno kodujący, jak i niekodujący DNA. Genomika pozwala lepiej zrozumieć wszystkie żywe istoty, ich ewolucję i różnorodność. Ma niezliczone zastosowania: na przykład do budowania drzew filogenetycznych, do poprawy produktywności i zrównoważonego rozwoju upraw, wspomagania dochodzeń kryminalnych, identyfikacji genów powiązanych z chorobami lub ukierunkowania optymalnego leczenia pacjentów chorych na raka.

W ciągu ostatnich 30 lat nastąpił znaczący postęp technologiczny w sekwencjonowaniu DNA, w szczególności dzięki międzynarodowemu wysiłkowi Human Genome Project. Obecnie istnieje technologia umożliwiająca sekwencjonowanie 60 miliardów zasad DNA, czyli 20 razy więcej niż ludzki genom. Przy tak dużej ilości informacji i dużych zbiorów danych informatycy i bioinformatyki współpracują z biologami, aby gromadzić, przechowywać i analizować wyniki sekwencjonowania DNA, zapewniając jednocześnie bezpieczny dostęp do danych.

Sukces genomiki otworzył drogę innym metodom stosowanym na dużą skalę do badania całości systemów biologicznych. Badania genomiczne można teraz uzupełniać innymi metodami "omiki" badania w celu gromadzenia danych na temat organizmów żywych na wszystkich poziomach: gatunków, populacji, osobników, komórek, białek, RNA, DNA. Transkryptomika to badanie zmian ogólnej ekspresji genów w różnych warunkach eksperymentalnych lub patologicznych. Proteomika to nauka o wszystkich białkach tworzących organizm lub system. Metabolomika to nauka o wszystkich metabolitach (cukier, tłuszcze, inne cząsteczki) zawartych w danym układzie biologicznym i ich interakcjach. Nieodłączne od bioinformatyki "omiki" umożliwiają globalne spojrzenie na złożone organizmy żywe w ich środowisku i jako takie torują drogę medycynie spersonalizowanej.

Genomics studies the full set of genetic material in an organism. In humans, that genome includes the DNA carried in 23 pairs of chromosomes in the nucleus, along with mitochondrial DNA. Genomics looks at both coding DNA and non-coding DNA, which helps scientists study how living things are built and how they differ.

This field is useful in many areas of biology and medicine. Scientists use genomics to build phylogenetic trees, improve crop productivity and sustainability, help with criminal investigations, find genes linked to disease, and support better cancer treatment choices. It also gives researchers a clearer view of evolution and biological diversity.

DNA sequencing has changed genomics over the past 30 years. Major progress came from the international Human Genome Project, which helped drive faster and more powerful sequencing methods. Today, technology can sequence about 60 billion DNA bases, or around 20 times the size of a human genome.

That amount of data requires bioinformatics, the use of computers to manage and study biological information. Computer scientists and bioinformaticians work with biologists to collect, store, analyze, and secure DNA sequencing results. Their teamwork makes it possible to handle large-scale genomic data.

Genomics also led to other large-scale &quot;omics&quot; studies. Transcriptomics examines how gene expression changes under different experimental or disease conditions. Proteomics studies all the proteins in an organism or system, and metabolomics studies the metabolites, such as sugars, fats, and other molecules, and how they interact.

Together, these omics fields give a broad view of living systems at the level of species, populations, individuals, cells, proteins, RNA, and DNA. Because they rely on bioinformatics, they help scientists understand complex biology in context. They also support the growth of personalized medicine.
