W silniku spalinowym samochodu mieszanka paliwowo-powietrzna zawiera energię chemiczną, która jest rodzajem energii potencjalnej. Ta energia potencjalna jest następnie przekształcana w energię kinetyczną w wyniku reakcji spalania, która wytwarza ciepło. 

Ciepło pochodzące z reakcji jest następnie przekształcane w pracę przez rozprężające się gorące gazy napierające na tłok, który następnie obraca wał korbowy, ostatecznie wprawiając samochód w ruch.

Wszystkie te wzajemne konwersje energii muszą być zgodne z pierwszą zasadą termodynamiki – energia jest zawsze zachowana i nie może być wytworzona ani zniszczona.

Ponieważ energia jest zachowana, zmianie energii wewnętrznej systemu musi towarzyszyć równa i przeciwna zmiana energii otoczenia. 

W układach chemicznych zmiana energii wewnętrznej jest opisana przez różnicę stanu początkowego reagenta i stanu końcowego produktu. Służy do zrozumienia przepływu energii w systemie.

<h4>Oszczędzanie energii</h4>

Energię można przekształcić z jednej formy w drugą, ale cała energia obecna przed wystąpieniem zmiany zawsze obecna jest po zakończeniu zmiany. Obserwacja ta wyraża się w prawie zachowania energii: podczas przemian chemicznych lub fizycznych energia nie może powstać ani zostać zniszczona, chociaż można zmienić jej formę.

Zgodnie z prawem zachowania materii podczas przemiany chemicznej nie następuje wykrywalna zmiana całkowitej ilości materii. Kiedy zachodzą reakcje chemiczne, zmiany energii są stosunkowo niewielkie, a zmiany masy są zbyt małe, aby je zmierzyć. Zatem prawa zachowania materii i energii obowiązują. W reakcjach jądrowych zmiany energii są jednak znacznie większe (około milion razy), zmiany masy są mierzalne, a konwersje materii w energię są znaczące.

<h4>Transfer energii i energia wewnętrzna</h4>

Substancje pełnią rolę rezerwuarów energii, co oznacza, że energię można do nich dodawać lub z nich usuwać. Energia jest magazynowana w substancji, gdy wzrasta energia kinetyczna jej atomów lub cząsteczek. Większa energia kinetyczna może mieć postać zwiększonych translacji (ruchy lub ruchy po linii prostej), wibracji lub rotacji atomów lub cząsteczek. W przypadku utraty energii cieplnej intensywność tych ruchów maleje, a energia kinetyczna spada.

Suma wszystkich możliwych rodzajów energii obecnej w substancji nazywana jest energią wewnętrzną (U), czasami symbolizowaną jako E.

Stojąc na szczycie Kilimandżaro na wysokości 5895 m n.p.m. nie ma znaczenia, w jaki sposób został on osiągnięty, czy ktoś tam wędrował, czy też skoczył na spadochronie. Energy conservation describes how energy changes form during chemical and physical changes. Energy can be converted from one form into another, but the energy present before a change still exists in some form after the change is complete. This is the law of conservation of energy. It says energy can neither be created nor destroyed.

The law of conservation of matter also applies during chemical change. In most chemical reactions, the total amount of matter does not show a detectable change. The energy changes are usually modest, and the mass changes are too small to measure. In nuclear reactions, the energy changes are much larger, by factors of a million or so. In those cases, mass changes can be measured, and matter-energy conversion becomes significant.

Substances can also act as reservoirs of energy. Energy can be added to a substance or removed from it. Energy is stored when the kinetic energy of its atoms or molecules increases. That motion can include translation, vibration, or rotation. When thermal energy is lost, those motions slow down, and the kinetic energy decreases.

The total of all possible kinds of energy in a substance is called internal energy, symbolized as U and sometimes as E. As a system changes, its internal energy can change. Energy can move from the system to the surroundings, or from the surroundings to the system. The surroundings then experience an equal and opposite energy change.

Internal energy is a state function, also called a state variable. That means its value depends only on the state of the system, not on how the system got there. Heat and work are not state functions because their values depend on the path taken. Altitude is a useful example of a state function. On Mt. Kilimanjaro, the summit elevation is 5895 m no matter whether someone hiked there or parachuted there. Distance traveled is different, so it is not a state function.
