Teoria pola krystalicznego opisuje strukturę elektronową kompleksów metali przejściowych w oparciu o oddziaływania elektrostatyczne między jonami metali przejściowych a cząsteczkami ligandów. Został wykorzystany do wyjaśnienia niektórych właściwości kompleksów metali przejściowych, takich jak magnetyzm i kolor.
Oddziaływania elektrostatyczne między cząsteczkami liganda a jonem metalu w kompleksie metali przejściowych są modelowane poprzez przybliżenie ligandów jako ładunków punktu ujemnego i obliczenie pola elektrostatycznego netto lub pola krystalicznego z powodu tych ładunków.
Strukturę elektronową kompleksu metali przejściowych można następnie opisać, badając wpływ pola krystalicznego na energie orbitali walencyjnych jonu metalu przejściowego.
Na przykład podczas modelowania kompleksu oktaedrycznego heksaamminominokobaltu(III) każdy ligand aminowy jest zastępowany ujemnym ładunkiem punktowym, co daje oktaedryczne pole krystaliczne.
Pod wpływem tego pola energie pięciu orbitali d jonu Co(III) nie są już takie same.
Tutaj orbitale dx 2−y2 i dz2 mają wyższą energię niż orbitale dxy, dyz i dxz. Przypisuje się to orientacji orbitali d. Płaty orbitali dx2−y2 i dz² są skierowane bezpośrednio w stronę ligandów, w związku z czym elektrony na tych orbitalach doświadczają silniejszego odpychania od ładunków liganda. 
Orbitale o wyższej energii mają symetrię eg i są znane jako zestaw orbitali eg, podczas gdy orbitale o niższych energiach mają symetrię t2g i stanowią zestaw orbitali t2g. Różnica energii między tymi dwoma zestawami jest znana jako energia rozszczepienia pola krystalicznego, reprezentowana przez symbol Δoct.
Wielkość Δoct zależy od wypadkowego oddziaływania elektrostatycznego między jonem metalu a cząsteczkami liganda. Niektóre ligandy, takie jak karbonyl, tworzą silne pole krystaliczne, co skutkuje dużą wartością Δoct. Takie ligandy nazywane są ligandami silnego pola.
Natomiast ligandy, takie jak jodek, wykazują małe wartości Δoct i są znane jako ligandy słabego pola. Zdolność ligandów do powodowania rosnących wartości Δoct jest wymieniona w szeregu spektrochemicznym.

Crystal Field Theory - Octahedral Complexes

Teoria pola kryształowego Aby wyjaśnić obserwowane zachowanie kompleksów metali przejściowych (takich jak kolory), opracowano model obejmujący oddziaływania elektrostatyczne pomiędzy elektronami z ligandów a elektronami na niezhybrydyzowanych orbitali d centralnego atomu metalu. Ten model elektrostatyczny to teoria pola krystalicznego (CFT). Model ten pomaga zrozumieć, zinterpretować i przewidzieć kolory, zachowanie magnetyczne i niektóre struktury związków koordynacyjnych metali przejściowych.

CFT koncentruje się na niewiążących elektronach na centralnym jonie metalu w kompleksach koordynacyjnych, a nie na wiązaniach metal-ligand. Podobnie jak teoria wiązań walencyjnych, CFT opowiada tylko część historii zachowania kompleksów. W czystej postaci CFT ignoruje wszelkie wiązania kowalencyjne pomiędzy ligandami i jonami metali. Zarówno ligand, jak i metal traktowane są jako nieskończenie małe ładunki punktowe.

Wszystkie elektrony są ujemne, więc elektrony oddane z ligandów będą odpychać elektrony metalu centralnego. Rozważmy zachowanie elektronów na niezhybrydyzowanych orbitali d w kompleksie oktaedrycznym. Pięć orbitali d składa się z obszarów w kształcie płatków i jest rozmieszczonych w przestrzeni, jak pokazano na rysunku 1. W kompleksie oktaedrycznym sześć ligandów koordynuje się wzdłuż osi.

W kompleksach oktaedrycznych np. orbitale ulegają dalszej destabilizacji (mają wyższą energię) w porównaniu z orbitalami t2g, ponieważ ligandy oddziałują silniej z orbitalami d, na które są bezpośrednio skierowane.

W kompleksach oktaedrycznych płaty dwóch z pięciu orbitali d, orbitali dx2−y2 i dz2, są skierowane w stronę ligandów (rysunek 1). Te dwa orbitale nazywane są np. orbitalami (symbol odnosi się do symetrii orbitali). Pozostałe trzy orbitale, orbitale dxy, dxz i dyz, mają listki skierowane pomiędzy ligandami i nazywane są orbitalami t2g (ponownie symbol odnosi się do symetrii orbitali). Gdy sześć ligandów zbliża się do jonu metalu wzdłuż osi oktaedru, ich ładunki punktowe odpychają elektrony na orbitali d jonu metalu. Jednakże odpychanie między elektronami na orbitaliach np. (orbitale dx2-y2) a ligandami jest większe niż odpychanie między elektronami na orbitali t2g (orbitale dxy, dxz i dyz) a ligandami. Dzieje się tak, ponieważ płaty np. orbitali są skierowane bezpośrednio na ligandy, podczas gdy płaty orbitali t2g są skierowane pomiędzy nimi. Zatem elektrony na np. orbitali jonu metalu w kompleksie oktaedrycznym mają wyższe energie potencjalne niż elektrony na orbitali t2g. Różnicę energii można przedstawić w sposób pokazany na rysunku 2.

Różnica energii między orbitalami eg i t2g nazywana jest rozszczepieniem pola krystalicznego i jest symbolizowana przez Δoct, gdzie okt oznacza oktaedryczny. Wielkość Δoct zależy od wielu czynników, w tym od charakteru sześciu ligandów znajdujących się wokół centralnego jonu metalu, ładunku metalu oraz tego, czy metal wykorzystuje orbitale 3d, 4d czy 5d. Różne ligandy powodują różne rozszczepienia pola krystalicznego. Rosnące rozszczepienie pola krystalicznego wytwarzane przez ligandy jest wyrażone w szeregu spektrochemicznym, którego krótka wersja jest podana tutaj:

Crystal field theory explains how ligands affect the d orbitals in transition metal complexes. This electrostatic model helps predict the colors, magnetic behavior, and some structures of coordination compounds. It focuses on the nonbonding electrons on the central metal ion, not on the metal-ligand bonds.

In crystal field theory, the metal ion and ligands are treated as very small point charges. Because electrons are negative, electrons donated by the ligands repel the electrons in the metal’s unhybridized d orbitals. In its pure form, this model ignores covalent bonding between ligands and metal ions, so it gives only part of the full picture.

The five d orbitals have different shapes and directions in space. In an octahedral complex, six ligands approach the metal ion along the axes. In a free metal ion in the gas phase, the d orbitals have the same energy, so electrons fill them according to Hund’s rule.

When ligands are arranged evenly around a metal ion, they create a spherical crystal field. This field raises the energy of all the d orbitals by the same amount. The picture changes in an octahedral geometry, where the d orbitals no longer all stay at the same energy.

In an octahedral complex, the d x2-y2 and d z2 orbitals point directly toward the ligands. These are called the e g orbitals. The d xy, d xz, and d yz orbitals point between the ligands, and these are called the t 2g orbitals. Because the e g orbitals face the ligands more directly, they feel stronger repulsion and have higher energy than the t 2g orbitals.

The energy gap between the e g and t 2g orbitals is called crystal field splitting and is written as Δ oct. The size of Δ oct depends on the ligands around the metal ion, the charge on the metal, and whether the metal uses 3 d, 4 d, or 5 d orbitals. Different ligands produce different splitting values, which are organized in the spectrochemical series.
