Reakcja Dielsa-Olchy to termicznie dopuszczona [4 + 2] cykloaddycja między 4π sprzężonym dienem a 2π dienofilem w celu utworzenia sześcioczłonowego produktu cyklicznego.
W tym procesie dwie słabsze wiązania π są przekształcane w dwie silniejsze obligacje σ.
Reakcja polega na skoordynowanym ruchu sześciu π elektronów w cyklicznym stanie przejściowym.
Aby dwa nowe wiązania σ utworzyły się jednocześnie, graniczne orbitale molekularne dwóch π układów muszą ustawić się tak, aby oddziałujące płaty były w fazie.
W warunkach termicznych konstruktywne nakładanie się jest możliwe, gdy stan podstawowy HOMO dienu i stan podstawowy LUMO dienofila oddziałują w sposób suprafacyjny.

The Diels-Alder reaction forms a six-membered ring from a conjugated diene and an alkene or alkyne. The alkene or alkyne is called the dienophile. This thermal pericyclic reaction is a [4+2] cycloaddition because four π electrons come from the diene and two come from the dienophile.

The bond changes happen in one concerted step. Six π electrons move together, and new σ bonds form at the same time. The product is an unsaturated six-membered ring.

Molecular orbital symmetry explains why the reaction works. The interacting lobes of the two π systems must be in phase so the new bonds can form synchronously. In the ground state, this can happen through HOMO(diene) and LUMO(dienophile) interaction or through HOMO(dienophile) and LUMO(diene) interaction. In each case, the two π components interact suprafacially, which makes the Diels-Alder reaction a thermally allowed [4+2] cycloaddition.
