Notacja skalarna jest przydatną metodą upraszczania obliczeń związanych z wektorami. Podczas dodawania lub odejmowania wektorów, ich składniki można dodawać lub odejmować oddzielnie, korzystając z notacji skalarnej. Na przykład, siła, będąca wielkością wektorową, może zostać rozłożona na składniki x i y, nazywane składnikami prostokątnymi, a następnie można określić wielkość i kierunek tych składników, korzystając z funkcji trygonometrycznych.
