Zasada momentów, czyli twierdzenie Varignona, opisuje równowagę ciała sztywnego pod wpływem działania sił.
Stwierdza ona, że moment siły wokół punktu jest równy sumie momentów składowych siły wokół punktu.
Moment siły w punkcie jest iloczynem prostopadłej odległości od punktu przyłożenia i przyłożonej siły.
Można go również wyznaczyć, rozdzielając siłę na jej składowe i mnożąc poszczególne składowe przez odpowiednie ramię momentu.
Rozważ zawór, w którym koło ręczne jest zamontowane na rurociągu. Gdy do obrotu koła przyłożona jest siła, moment siły wokół środka można określić, mnożąc wielkość siły przez prostopadłą odległość od środka do punktu przyłożenia.
Przyłożoną siłę można również rozłożyć na jej składowe, a moment można określić, dodając iloczyny każdej składowej siły wraz z odpowiadającą jej odległością.

Zasada momentu, znana również jako twierdzenie Varignona, jest fundamentalnym pojęciem w fizyce i inżynierii, opisujące równowagę bryły sztywnej pod wpływem sił zewnętrznych. Zasada ta mówi, że moment siły względem punktu jest równy sumie momentów składowych siły względem tego samego punktu.

Moment oblicza się poprzez pomnożenie wartości siły przez odległość prostopadłą od punktu przyłożenia do punktu, względem którego jest obliczany moment. Przyjrzyjmy się zaworowi, na którym zamocowane jest koło ręczne na rurociągu. Kiedy ktoś przykłada siłę, aby obrócić koło, moment siły względem centrum można obliczyć poprzez pomnożenie wartości siły przez odległość prostopadłą od centrum do punktu przyłożenia siły.



Jednak obliczenia mogą stać się bardziej złożone, jeśli siła przyłożona nie jest prostopadła do zaworu lub ma wiele składowych. W takim przypadku możemy rozłożyć siłę na składowe wektorowe i obliczyć moment każdej składowej indywidualnie, mnożąc ją przez odległość prostopadłą od punktu przyłożenia tej składowej do punktu, względem którego jest obliczany moment. Po obliczeniu każdego momentu możemy je zsumować, aby określić ogólny moment siły względem badanego punktu.

Zasada momentu znajduje zastosowanie w wielu dziedzinach, od inżynierii konstrukcyjnej po projektowanie mechaniczne. Obliczając momenty sił działających na system lub konstrukcję, możemy określić, czy znajduje się on w równowadze, będzie się obracał lub poruszał z powodu nierównowagi sił.

The principle of moments, also called Varignon's theorem, explains how a force creates rotation about a point. It is a key idea in physics and engineering. It also helps describe when a rigid body stays in equilibrium under external forces.

The moment of a force is found by multiplying the force by the perpendicular distance from the point of application to the point being studied. A larger force or a larger distance gives a larger moment. This makes the idea useful for checking how strongly a force can turn an object.

A valve with a hand wheel on a pipeline gives a clear example. When a person pushes on the wheel, the moment about the center depends on the force and the perpendicular distance from the center to where the force is applied. If the force is not perpendicular to the valve, the calculation is less direct.

In that case, the force can be split into component vectors. Each component has its own moment, and each one is found using the perpendicular distance from the point of application of that component to the point of rotation. After the moments are found, they are added together to get the overall moment about the point.

This method is used in structural engineering and mechanical design. It helps show whether a system or structure is in equilibrium. It also shows when an imbalance of forces may cause rotation or motion.
