Ramy są nieodłącznymi elementami różnych systemów mechanicznych i konstrukcyjnych, z których korzystamy na co dzień. Charakteryzują się dużą stabilnością i zdolnością do przenoszenia dużych obciążeń. W przeciwieństwie do kratownic, które składają się wyłącznie z elementów dwusiłowych, ramy są budowane zarówno z elementów dwusiłowych, jak i wielosiłowych, połączonych za pomocą sworzni i płóz.

Dzięki swojej wszechstronności ramy znajdują szerokie zastosowanie, m.in. jako podpory konstrukcyjne dla belek i kolumn, w podwoziach pojazdów oraz w budownictwie, gdzie stanowią podstawę maszyn takich jak dźwigi czy koparki.

Analiza ramy polega na zrozumieniu sił działających na każdy element konstrukcji. Na przykład, rozważmy scenariusz, w którym dźwig podnosi obciążenie W. Narysowany zostaje diagram sił, aby określić siły zewnętrzne działające na dźwig. Następnie każdy element ramy jest analizowany oddzielnie w celu identyfikacji znanych i nieznanych sił.

W pierwszej kolejności analizuje się elementy dwusiłowe, aby określić siły działające na każdym końcu elementu. Następnie określa się siły działające na każdym punkcie połączenia elementów wielosiłowych.
