Buffers: Buffer Capacity

Pojemność buforowa, reprezentowana jako beta, jest ilościową miarą odporności buforu na zmianę pH po dodaniu kwasu lub zasady. Wyraża się ją jako liczbę moli kwasu (C, a) lub zasady (Cb) dodanych do jednolitrowego roztworu buforowego przed zmianą pH.
Im większa pojemność bufora, tym większa zdolność buforu do opierania się zmianom pH.
Do kwasu o pKa równym 5 wykreśla się liczbę moli dodanej zasady w funkcji pH. Pochodna otrzymanej krzywej wykazuje największą pojemność buforową, gdy pH jest równe pKa, gdzie stężenie słabego kwasu i jego sprzężonej zasady jest równe w roztworze buforowym. Tak więc efektywny zakres pH buforu jest o jedną jednostkę więcej lub mniej niż pKa.
Poza zakresem pH 3-10 istniejące wysokie stężenie jonów H+ lub OH− jest odporne na zmianę pH dodanego kwasu lub zasady.
Stężenie gatunków buforowych proporcjonalnie decyduje o pojemności bufora.

Pojemność buforowa jest ilościową miarą bufora odpornego na zmianę pH. Jak pokazano w poniższym równaniu, pojemność buforowa, oznaczona jako „beta”, wyraża się jako liczbę moli kwasu lub zasady potrzebną do zmiany pH jednolitrowego roztworu buforowego o 1 jednostkę. Tutaj Ca i Cb wskazują odpowiednio liczbę moli kwasu i zasady. Należy pamiętać, że dpH reprezentuje zmianę pH.

Na wykresie pH wykreślono jako funkcję liczby moli zasady (Cb) dodanej do słabego kwasu o pKa równym 5. Pochodna krzywej daje inny wykres przedstawiający pojemność buforową w funkcji pH. Wykres ten pokazuje, że pojemność buforowa jest najwyższa, gdy pH jest równe pKa, gdzie roztwór zawiera równe stężenie słabego kwasu i jego sprzężonej zasady. W przypadku tego słabego kwasu pojemność buforowa jest największa przy pH 5, gdzie odporność na zmiany pH jest największa. Zazwyczaj wybrany bufor powinien mieć wartość pKa mieszczącą się w zakresie plus/minus 1 jednostka pożądanego pH. Oprócz wartości pKa pojemność buforowa zależy również od stężenia słabego kwasu i jego sprzężonej zasady w roztworze. Im wyższe stężenie substancji buforujących, tym większa pojemność buforowa.

Buffer capacity describes how well a buffer resists changes in pH. It is a quantitative measure, so it tells how much acid or base a one-liter buffer solution can take before its pH shifts by 1 unit. In the equation, beta is the buffer capacity, while Ca and Cb represent the moles of acid and base added. The term dpH means the change in pH.

A graph of pH versus the moles of base added to a weak acid with a pKa of 5 shows how buffering works as more base is added. Taking the derivative of that curve gives a second plot, which shows buffer capacity across different pH values. The buffer capacity is highest when pH equals pKa. At that point, the weak acid and its conjugate base are present at equal concentrations.

For this weak acid, the strongest resistance to pH change occurs at pH 5. That is why a buffer should usually have a pKa within plus or minus 1 unit of the target pH. Buffer capacity also depends on how much weak acid and conjugate base are in the solution. Higher concentrations of these buffer species lead to higher buffer capacity.
