Conservation of Mechanical Energy

Wyobraźmy sobie oponę kołyszącą się jak wahadło w przód i w tył pod wpływem siły grawitacji. Zakłada się, że układ wahadło-Ziemia jest systemem izolowanym.
Gdy wahadło się wychyla, energia układu zmienia się tam i z powrotem między grawitacyjną energią potencjalną a energią kinetyczną, podczas gdy energia mechaniczna układu - suma tych dwóch - pozostaje stała.

Energia mechaniczna E układu jest sumą jego energii potencjalnej U i energii kinetycznej K znajdujących się w nim obiektów. Co dzieje się z tą energią mechaniczną, gdy tylko siły zachowawcze powodują transfer energii w układzie, to znaczy, gdy siły tarcia i oporu nie działają na obiekty w układzie? Załóżmy również, że system jest odizolowany od otoczenia; innymi słowy, żadna siła zewnętrzna pochodząca od obiektu znajdującego się na zewnątrz układu nie powoduje zmian energii wewnątrz układu.

Kiedy siła zachowawcza działa W na obiekt w układzie, siła ta przenosi energię pomiędzy energią kinetyczną K obiektu a energią potencjalną U systemu. W układzie izolowanym, w którym tylko siły konserwatywne powodują zmiany energii, energia kinetyczna i energia potencjalna mogą się zmieniać; jednakże ich suma, energia mechaniczna E układu, nie może się zmienić. Wynik ten nazywany jest zasadą zachowania energii mechanicznej.

Zasada zachowania energii mechanicznej pozwala nam rozwiązywać problemy, które trudno byłoby rozwiązać stosując wyłącznie prawa Newtona. Gdy energia mechaniczna układu jest zachowana, sumę energii kinetycznej i energii potencjalnej w jednej chwili można powiązać z ich sumą w innej chwili, bez obliczania pracy wykonanej przez zaangażowane siły. Wielką zaletą stosowania zasady zachowania energii zamiast praw ruchu Newtona jest to, że możliwe jest przejście od stanu początkowego do stanu końcowego bez uwzględnienia całego ruchu pośredniego.

Mechanical energy in an isolated system is the total of kinetic energy and potential energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, and potential energy is stored energy. The transcript focuses on what happens when energy shifts within a system without outside influence.

In this case, only conservative forces act on the objects in the system. Conservative forces can transfer energy between kinetic energy and potential energy. Friction and drag do not act here, and no external force from outside the system changes the energy inside it.

When a conservative force does work on an object, it changes how the energy is shared between kinetic and potential forms. The kinetic energy and potential energy can each change. However, their sum, called the mechanical energy E, does not change.

This result is known as the principle of conservation of mechanical energy. It is useful for solving problems that are hard to handle with Newton’s laws alone. Instead of tracking every step of the motion, you can compare the initial and final states and relate the total mechanical energy at one instant to the total at another.
