Ruch krzywoliniowy cząstki można opisać za pomocą biegunowego układu współrzędnych.
Współrzędna promieniowa, oznaczona jako "r", rozciąga się na zewnątrz od ustalonego początku układu współrzędnych do cząstki. Współrzędna kątowa "θ (theta)", mierzona w radianach, jest kątem przeciwnym do ruchu wskazówek zegara między ustaloną linią odniesienia a linią promieniową łączącą początek układu współrzędnych z punktem.
Położenie cząstki można wyrazić za pomocą wektora jednostkowego wzdłuż kierunku promieniowego. Różnicowanie położenia obiektu w czasie daje prędkość.
Tutaj pierwszym składnikiem jest prędkość liniowa wzdłuż kierunku radialnego, a drugim składnikiem jest składowa prędkości poprzecznej obiektu. Te dwie składowe prędkości są zawsze prostopadłe do siebie.
Pochodna czasu wyrażenia prędkości daje przyspieszenie. Szybkość zmian wektora jednostki kątowej jest równa ujemnemu iloczynowi prędkości kątowej wektora jednostki promieniowej.
Tutaj drugą pochodną współrzędnej kątowej jest przyspieszenie kątowe obiektu. Podstawienie wyrazów daje wyrażenie na przyspieszenie, w którym składowe są prostopadłe do siebie.

Druga pochodna współrzędnej kątowej reprezentuje przyspieszenie kątowe cząstki. Analogicznie do prędkości, obie składowe przyspieszenia są wzajemnie prostopadłe. Podsumowując, biegunowy układ współrzędnych w łatwy sposób oddaje zawiłości ruchu krzywoliniowego, odsłaniając wzajemne oddziaływanie dynamiki promieniowej i stycznej.

Polar coordinates describe curvilinear motion using a radial distance and an angle. The radial coordinate, r, extends from a fixed origin to the particle. The angular coordinate, θ, is measured in radians. It gives the counterclockwise angle between a fixed reference line and the radial line to the particle.

The particle’s position is written with a unit vector in the radial direction. Taking the time derivative of that position gives the velocity. That velocity has two parts. One is radial, or linear motion along the radial direction. The other is tangential motion, which is perpendicular to the radial direction.

Taking the time derivative of velocity gives the acceleration. The rate of change of the angular unit vector equals the negative product of the angular velocity and the radial unit vector. The second derivative of the angular coordinate gives the particle’s angular acceleration. Like velocity, acceleration in polar form has two perpendicular components. This makes polar coordinates a clear way to describe the radial and tangential parts of curvilinear motion.
