Stress-Strain Diagram

Rozważmy cylindryczną próbkę umieszczoną w systemie w celu zmierzenia jego wytrzymałości na rozciąganie.
Na środkowej części próbki wyryte są dwa znaki pomiarowe. Długość między znakami jest znana jako długość miernika.

Wraz ze wzrostem obciążenia zwiększa się długość miernika, a wydłużenie jest rejestrowane dla każdej wartości obciążenia.
Jednocześnie rejestrowana jest również zmiana średnicy próbki.
Naprężenie oblicza się, dzieląc obciążenie przez pierwotne pole przekroju poprzecznego próbki. Odkształcenie oblicza się, dzieląc wydłużenie przez oryginalną długość miernika.
Wykres naprężenie-odkształcenie uzyskuje się następnie poprzez wykreślenie odkształcenia jako odciętej i naprężenia jako rzędnej.
Zaobserwowano, że naprężenia zmieniają się liniowo wraz z odkształceniem podczas początkowego obciążenia. Jednak wraz ze wzrostem obciążenia niewielkie zmiany naprężeń prowadzą do znacznych zmian wartości odkształceń dla większości materiałów.
W zależności od ich temperatury i prędkości ładowania, wyniki różnią się w przypadku niektórych materiałów.

Wykres naprężenie-odkształcenie jest kluczowym narzędziem, które graficznie przedstawia właściwości mechaniczne materiału. Wykres ten powstaje na podstawie próby rozciągania przeprowadzonej na starannie przygotowanej próbce cylindrycznej. Próbka ma dwa znaki pomiarowe wpisane w jego środkowej części, a odległość między tymi znakami nazywana jest długością pomiarową. Próbkę cylindryczną umieszcza się w maszynie wytrzymałościowej, która przykłada rosnące obciążenie centryczne. Wraz ze wzrostem obciążenia rośnie także długość miernika. Tę zmianę długości lub wydłużenie rejestruje się dla każdej wartości obciążenia za pomocą czujnika zegarowego. W wielu przypadkach drugi czujnik zegarowy jest używany jednocześnie do pomiaru zmian średnicy próbki.


 Następnie oblicza się naprężenie, dzieląc obciążenie przez pierwotne pole przekroju poprzecznego próbki. Tymczasem odkształcenie określa się, dzieląc wydłużenie przez początkową długość pomiarową. Obliczone wartości są następnie nanoszone na wykres, z odkształceniem przedstawionym na odciętej i naprężeniem na rzędnej, tworząc diagram naprężenie-odkształcenie. Warto zauważyć, że diagramy naprężenia i odkształcenia mogą znacznie się różnić w przypadku poszczególnych materiałów. Nawet w przypadku tego samego materiału wyniki mogą się różnić ze względu na szereg czynników, takich jak temperatura próbki w momencie badania i prędkość, z jaką przykładane jest obciążenie.

A stress-strain diagram shows how a material responds during a tensile test. It records the mechanical behavior of a cylindrical specimen as it is pulled by an increasing centric load. The specimen is carefully prepared before testing.

Two gauge marks are inscribed on the central part of the specimen. The distance between these marks is the gauge length. As the load increases, the gauge length also increases. This change in length is called elongation.

The elongation is measured for each load value with a dial gauge. In many cases, a second dial gauge is used at the same time to measure changes in the specimen diameter. Stress is calculated by dividing the load by the original cross-sectional area. Strain is calculated by dividing the elongation by the initial gauge length.

These values are then plotted on a graph. Strain is placed on the horizontal axis, or abscissa, and stress is placed on the vertical axis, or ordinate. The result is the stress-strain diagram. It can differ a lot from one material to another.

Even results from the same material can change under different test conditions. Temperature during testing can affect the outcome. The speed at which the load is applied can also change the diagram.
