Gdy próbka jest poddawana obciążeniu, długość najpierw zwiększa się liniowo w wolnym tempie, co skutkuje początkową linią prostą o stromym nachyleniu na wykresie naprężenie-odkształcenie.
Po osiągnięciu krytycznej wartości naprężenia próbka ulega znacznemu odkształceniu przy minimalnym wzroście przyłożonego obciążenia, głównie z powodu naprężeń ścinających powodujących poślizg wzdłuż ukośnych powierzchni.
Wraz ze wzrostem obciążenia średnica materiału zmniejsza się w punkcie, zwanym "szyjką". Po szyjkowaniu nawet niewielka ilość obciążenia wydłuża próbkę jeszcze bardziej, aż do pęknięcia.
Uplastycznianie to proces, w którym materiał zaczyna odkształcać się plastycznie. Naprężenie, przy którym zaczyna się plastyczność, nazywa się granicą plastyczności, podczas gdy naprężenie odpowiadające maksymalnemu obciążeniu jest wytrzymałością końcową, a naprężenie przy zerwaniu jest wytrzymałością zrywającą.

Gdy próbka jest obciążona, początkowo wykazuje liniowy wzrost długości, przedstawiony jako stroma linia prosta na wykresie naprężenie-odkształcenie. Wskazuje, że materiał odkształca się elastycznie i po rozładunku powróci do swojego pierwotnego kształtu. Jednak po osiągnięciu krytycznej wartości naprężenia rozpoczyna się odkształcenie plastyczne. Na tym etapie następuje znaczne odkształcenie przy niewielkim wzroście przyłożonego obciążenia, głównie z powodu naprężeń ścinających ułatwiających poślizg wzdłuż ukośnych powierzchni materiału. Po przewężeniu nawet niewielki przyrost obciążenia znacznie rozciąga próbkę, aż do jej zerwania.


 W tym kontekście granica plastyczności to odkształcenie plastyczne inicjujące naprężenie. Wytrzymałość ostateczna to maksymalne obciążenie, jakie materiał może wytrzymać przed przewężeniem, a wytrzymałość na zerwanie to naprężenie prowadzące do rozerwania. Co ciekawe, wykres naprężenie-odkształcenie stali konstrukcyjnej pozostaje stały po osiągnięciu plastyczności ze względu na utwardzanie przez odkształcenie, w przeciwieństwie do aluminium, w którym naprężenie wzrasta nieliniowo po uplastycznieniu. Wreszcie plastyczność, wskazująca na znaczne odkształcenie plastyczne przed zerwaniem, mierzy się poprzez procentowe wydłużenie lub zmniejszenie pola przekroju poprzecznego. Ductile materials such as structural steel and aluminium show a multi-stage stress-strain response. When a specimen is loaded, its length first increases linearly at a slow rate. This produces a steep straight line on the stress-strain diagram. That initial part shows elastic deformation, which means the material returns to its original shape after unloading.

When the stress reaches a critical value, plastic deformation begins. In this stage, the material changes shape a lot while the applied load increases only a little. Shearing stresses help this process by allowing slippage along oblique surfaces in the material.

As loading continues, the specimen may start to narrow in diameter. This is called necking. After necking begins, even a small increase in load can stretch the specimen greatly until it finally ruptures.

The diagram also identifies key strength values. Yield strength is the stress that starts plastic deformation. Ultimate strength is the maximum load the material can carry before necking. Breaking strength is the stress at rupture. Structural steel often shows a steady post-yield region because of strain-hardening, while aluminium shows a non-linear stress increase after yield. Ductility is the ability to undergo large plastic deformation before rupture, and it is measured by percent elongation or reduction in cross-sectional area. Under compression, the stress-strain curves of ductile materials differ at high strains because necking does not occur.
