Hooke's Law

Prawo Hooke'a mówi, że naprężenie przyłożone do materiału jest wprost proporcjonalne do odkształcenia, któremu doświadcza w granicach sprężystości. W przypadku materiałów ciągliwych granica sprężystości często pokrywa się z granicą plastyczności.
Stała proporcjonalności, znana jako moduł sprężystości, ma te same jednostki co naprężenie, ponieważ odkształcenie jest wielkością bezwymiarową.
Na właściwości fizyczne metali konstrukcyjnych ma wpływ zastosowany proces produkcyjny. Wykresy naprężenie-odkształcenie czystego żelaza i trzech różnych gatunków stali wykazują znaczne różnice w granicy plastyczności, wytrzymałości końcowej i punkcie zerwania.
Mają jednak ten sam moduł sprężystości: ich sztywność w zakresie liniowym jest taka sama. Tak więc, jeśli stal o wysokiej wytrzymałości zostanie zastąpiona stalą o niższej wytrzymałości w konstrukcji o tych samych wymiarach, będzie miała zwiększoną nośność.
W materiałach izotropowych, takich jak metale, zależność naprężenie-odkształcenie jest niezależna od kierunku obciążenia. Jednak w przypadku materiałów anizotropowych, takich jak kompozyty wzmocnione włóknami, moduły sprężystości różnią się znacznie w kierunkach równoległych i prostopadłych do włókien, co skutkuje różnymi odpornościami na obciążenia.

 Implementacja prawa Hooke'a obowiązuje, dopóki materiał nie osiągnie granicy proporcjonalności. Powyżej tego punktu zależność naprężenie-odkształcenie staje się nieliniowa. Ta granica często pokrywa się z granicą plastyczności materiałów o charakterze plastycznym. Jednak określenie tego limitu dla innych typów materiałów może być trudne ze względu na nieliniowość zależności naprężenie-odkształcenie.


 Materiały dzieli się na dwa główne typy w oparciu o właściwości mechaniczne, takie jak izotropowe i anizotropowe. Materiały izotropowe, takie jak metale, wykazują stałe właściwości niezależnie od kierunku obciążenia. W związku z tym ich zależność naprężenie-odkształcenie, w tym moduł sprężystości, pozostaje stała niezależnie od kierunku przyłożonego naprężenia. Stress-strain limits in materials explain how solids respond when force is applied. Stress is the applied force per area, and strain is the change in shape or size that results. In the elastic range, strain stays directly proportional to stress. The constant that connects them is called the modulus of elasticity, or Young's modulus.

This linear behavior continues only up to the proportional limit. After that point, the stress-strain relationship becomes nonlinear. For ductile materials, this limit often matches the yield point. For other materials, finding that point can be difficult because the curve no longer follows a simple pattern.

Materials can also be grouped as isotropic or anisotropic based on how their mechanical behavior changes with direction. Isotropic materials, such as metals, have the same properties no matter which way the load is applied. Their stress-strain response and modulus of elasticity stay constant with direction.

Anisotropic materials behave differently. Fiber-reinforced composites are one example. They contain strong fibers inside a softer matrix, and their modulus of elasticity changes depending on whether the load is parallel or perpendicular to the fibers. These materials are strongest when the fibers line up with the direction of the load.
