Three-Winding Transformers

Three-winding transformer models show how three identical single-phase transformers can be combined into a three-phase transformer connection. The high-voltage windings are labeled A, B, and C. The low-voltage windings are labeled a, b, and c. This notation separates the high-voltage side from the low-voltage side and matches each phase to its own winding.

For a grounded Y-Y three-phase transformer, the per-unit equivalent circuit uses common base quantities to simplify analysis. The base complex power is the same throughout the system. The voltage base ratio matches the ratio of the rated line-to-line voltages of the transformer. These base values make it easier to compare parts of the system on the same scale.

Balanced currents in the transformer produce zero neutral current. As a result, there is no voltage drop across the neutral impedance. The per-unit circuit then looks like a single-phase ideal transformer, which makes the three-phase system easier to study.

The relations for a single-phase three-winding transformer are built by extending the equations used for two-winding transformers. These relations can be written in actual values or in per-unit form. That approach keeps the equations consistent with the per-unit equivalent circuit and helps describe practical transformer behavior.

In a practical three-winding transformer circuit, external series impedances and shunt admittance branches are important. These elements are usually evaluated with an open-circuit test. When one winding is open, the transformer behaves like a two-winding transformer. Standard short-circuit tests are then used to find the per-unit leakage impedances.

The shunt admittance branches are often ignored to keep the model simpler. The short-circuit test results provide the per-unit leakage impedances, which represent the series impedance part of the equivalent circuit. By focusing on these series impedances, the model gives a clearer picture of transformer performance while still capturing the key ideal and practical features of three-winding transformers in three-phase systems.
