Najbardziej rozpowszechnionym wśród akceleratorów jest chlorek wapnia. Domieszka ta jest często stosowana w niskich temperaturach od 35 do 40 stopni Fahrenheita lub gdy szybka naprawa wymaga wysokiej wczesnej wytrzymałości po zmieszaniu.
Dodanie bezwodnego chlorku wapnia do 1 procenta masy cementu może przyspieszyć proces twardnienia tak skutecznie, jak wzrost temperatury o 11 stopni Fahrenheita.
Równomierne rozprowadzenie chlorku wapnia w mieszance ma kluczowe znaczenie i najskuteczniej osiąga się je poprzez rozpuszczenie płatków zamiast domieszek granulatu w wodzie zarobowej.

Powszechnym akceleratorem jest chlorek wapnia, który jest szczególnie przydatny do przyspieszania wczesnej wytrzymałości w zimne dni lub do szybkich napraw wymagających szybkiego wytworzenia ciepła po wymieszaniu.

Skuteczność działania chlorku wapnia można porównać do podniesienia temperatury betonu o około 6,11 stopni Celsjusza (°C), przy czym typowa dodatkowa ilość wynosi od 1 do 2 procent masy cementu. Rozprowadzenie tej domieszki musi być równomierne w całej mieszance, co uzyskuje się przez rozpuszczenie jej w wodzie zarobowej.

Jednak stosowanie chlorku wapnia ma swoje wady. Może zmniejszyć odporność betonu na atak siarczanów i zwiększyć ryzyko reakcji alkalia-kruszywo. Ponadto może zwiększyć skurcz i pełzanie oraz obniżyć trwałość betonu napowietrzonego w cyklach zamrażania i rozmrażania. Istnieje również potencjalne ryzyko korozji osadzonych metali, takich jak stal zbrojeniowa. W rezultacie inne domieszki bezchlorkowe, takie jak mrówczan wapnia, są brane pod uwagę w celu przyspieszenia, ponieważ są mniej podatne na korozję. Jednak ich długoterminowe skutki dla betonu są nadal przedmiotem badań.

Calcium chloride is a concrete admixture that speeds up hardening and helps concrete gain early strength faster. It does not always change the setting time itself, but it can reduce the time needed in practice. This makes it useful in cold weather and in rapid repair work where quick heat generation after mixing is helpful.

A common amount is 1 to 2 percent of the cement mass. Its effect can be compared with raising the concrete temperature by 11 degrees Fahrenheit. To spread it evenly through the mix, the calcium chloride is dissolved in the mixing water.

Calcium chloride also has important limits. It may lower resistance to sulfate attack and increase the risk of alkali-aggregate reaction. It can also increase shrinkage and creep, reduce the freeze-thaw durability of air-entrained concrete, and raise the chance of corrosion in embedded metal, including reinforcing steel.

Because of these concerns, chloride-free admixtures such as calcium formate are also used for acceleration. They are less likely to cause corrosion. Their long-term effects on concrete are still being studied.
