Absolute and local extreme values show the highest and lowest points on a function graph. Absolute maximum and absolute minimum values describe the highest and lowest values across the entire domain. Local maximum and local minimum values describe the highest and lowest values within a smaller part of the graph.

Periodic functions such as sine and cosine can have extreme values at many points. Their repeating pattern creates multiple local extrema. In these cases, the derivative becomes zero at several points, which matches the locations of those local highs and lows.

Some graphs have only one extreme value. An upward-opening parabola has a minimum, and that minimum is both a local minimum and an absolute minimum. A downward-opening parabola has a maximum, and that maximum is both a local maximum and an absolute maximum. Other graphs, such as a slanted line, may have no extreme values at all. If that same line is restricted to a closed interval, the extrema occur at the endpoints.

The Extreme Value Theorem gives the conditions for extreme values to exist. It states that a function continuous on a closed interval must reach both an absolute maximum and an absolute minimum on that interval. If a function is not continuous, it may miss its highest value. A function on an open interval may also fail to reach its highest or lowest value because the endpoints are not included. These cases show why continuity and a closed interval matter when looking for extrema.
