An ellipse centered at the origin shows clear symmetry in its graph. Its equation describes a smooth, closed curve whose distance from the center keeps a constant ratio between the horizontal and vertical axes. Because the ellipse stretches farther along the x-axis than the y-axis, it has a horizontal shape.

This ellipse has symmetry across the x-axis. That means the top half and bottom half are mirror images across the horizontal axis. Algebraically, the equation stays the same when y is replaced with -y.

It also has symmetry across the y-axis. The left side and right side match when the graph is reflected over the vertical axis. This is confirmed when replacing x with -x does not change the equation.

The ellipse is also symmetric about the origin. A 180° rotation leaves the graph unchanged in form. This happens when both x and y are negated at the same time and the equation still holds. These three symmetries show the ellipse’s balanced structure and make it easier to graph and analyze.
