Spatial Cueing

1. Equipamento

3. Executando o experimento

<li>"Cada teste deste experimento será mais ou menos o mesmo. Você verá uma cruz de fixação vermelha no início de cada julgamento. É importante que você mantenha os olhos fixos nessa posição o tempo todo. Após 100 ms, a cruz de fixação será substituída por uma seta vermelha apontando para uma das duas caixas verdes que também estarão no visor. Finalmente, depois de 100 ms, a seta desaparecerá e uma letra aparecerá em uma das duas caixas. Sempre será um L ou um T, e seu trabalho é informar qual deles está usando a chave apropriada. Visual attention is the limited ability to focus on some information while ignoring other stimuli in the environment. It is studied in many senses, including vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. Researchers most often examine it in vision because it is easy to test with controlled displays.

A common method is the spatial cueing paradigm. In this task, a cue appears to guide attention toward one location, and researchers measure what happens when attention is focused there instead of elsewhere. The method helps show the effects of directing visual attention to some places and not others.

The spatial cueing approach was developed by psychologist Michael Posner in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In his papers, he described attention as a spotlight that selectively lights up part of a scene. The procedure shown here demonstrates the standard steps used in a spatial cueing experiment to study visual attention.
