Preparing Anhydrous Reagents and Equipment

Secagem de Vidros
1. Secagem de forno

	<li>Coloque o recipiente com o reagente em um forno de secagem a uma temperatura abaixo do ponto de fusão do sólido. Quando disponível, use um forno a vácuo. Use luvas de proteção térmica, se necessário.</li>
	<li>Deixe o reagente secar por várias horas dentro do forno.</li>
	<li>Retire o recipiente com o reagente do forno.</li>
	<li>Deixe a amostra esfriar até a temperatura ambiente, idealmente dentro de um dessecador.</li>
	<li>Determine o peso e certifique-se de que ele é menor do que antes de secar. Se necessário, repetir as etapas 2.2 – 2.5.</li>
	<li>Uma vez que o reagente é resfriado à temperatura ambiente, ele está pronto para uso.</li>

Muitas reações na química orgânica são sensíveis à umidade e devem ser realizadas sob cuidadosa exclusão da água. Cada componente em tal reação deve ser completamente anidro, ou livre de água. Isso inclui todos os reagentes e solventes utilizados, bem como todos os vidros e equipamentos que entrarão em contato com os reagentes. Reações extremamente sensíveis à água devem ser realizadas dentro de um porta-luvas que fornece um ambiente completamente selado para trabalhar sob através de um par de luvas que se projeta para fora para um dos lados da câmara.

Alambiques ou dessecantes solventes são frequentemente usados para remover a água antes de iniciar uma reação. Os alambiques solventes usam metais alcalinos, como o sódio, para reagir com a água - e deixam um teor de água residual de cerca de 10 partes por milhão. Os dessecantes são sólidos altamente higroscópicos, o que significa que absorvem água prontamente. Certos dessecantes, como o sulfato de sódio, são usados para remover a água de pequenas quantidades de um solvente orgânico e devem ser filtrados antes de serem usados posteriormente. As peneiras moleculares são o dessecante mais comumente usado e são usadas para secar grandes volumes de solventes. Eles são feitos de um material microporoso composto de aluminossilicatos de sódio e cálcio. As peneiras moleculares funcionam prendendo a água dentro das esferas - removendo-a efetivamente do solvente. Uma vez usados, eles podem ser regenerados em um forno. Many organic reactions must be set up without water. Moisture in the air can react with sensitive reagents before the reaction even starts. When that happens, the desired reaction may fail or give poor yields because the reactants have changed chemically.

To prevent this, the reaction is run under an inert atmosphere. An inert atmosphere is a gas environment that does not react easily with the chemicals in the flask. Nitrogen gas is often used, and argon may be used for reactions that are even more sensitive.

Every part of the setup must be anhydrous, meaning free of water. That includes the reagents, the solvents, the glassware, and any equipment that will touch the chemicals. For extremely water-sensitive work, the reaction is done inside a glovebox. A glovebox is a sealed chamber that keeps out moisture and lets the chemist work through built-in gloves.
