What is the Cell Cycle?

O ciclo celular se refere a sequência de eventos ao longo de uma vida típica das células incluindo crescimento, replicação de DNA, às vezes mais crescimento, e divisão. Para organismos que se reproduzem sexualmente a vida começa como um zigoto, um óvulo fertilizado. Com o tempo, aquela célula original única cresce e se divide de forma controlada para produzir um complexo individual, multicelular.As células continuam este processo, especialmente para manter e reparar tecidos durante a progressão do envelhecimento. Em contraste, organismos unicelulares como bactérias dependem da divisão celular para simplesmente reproduzir via fissão binária. Infelizmente, quando a divisão celular é deixada sem marcações pode resultar em câncer, com perda de controle sobre sequências genómicas que regulam o processo normal.

o que é o ciclo celular?

O ciclo celular refere-se à sequência de eventos que ocorrem ao longo da vida de uma célula comum. Nas células eucarióticas, o ciclo celular somático tem duas fases: interfase e fase mitótica. Durante a interfase, a célula cresce, executa as suas funções metabólicas básicas, copia o seu DNA e prepara-se para a divisão celular mitótica. Depois, durante a mitose e a citocinese, a célula divide os seus materiais nucleares e citoplasmáticos, respectivamente. Isso gera duas células filhas idênticas à célula mãe original. O ciclo celular é essencial para o crescimento do organismo, substituição de células danificadas e regeneração de células envelhecidas. O cancro é o resultado de uma divisão celular descontrolada desencadeada por uma mutação genética.
 
 <h4>Pontos de Controlo do Ciclo Celular</h4>
 
 Há três grandes pontos de controlo no ciclo celular eucariótico. Em cada ponto de controlo, a progressão para a fase seguinte do ciclo celular pode ser interrompida até que as condições sejam mais favoráveis. O ponto de controlo G1 é o primeiro, onde são avaliados o tamanho, a energia, os nutrientes, a qualidade do DNA e outros fatores externos. Se a célula for considerada inadequada, ela não continua para a fase S da interfase. O ponto de controlo G2 é o segundo ponto de controlo. Aqui, a célula garante que todo o DNA foi replicado e não está danificado antes de entrar na mitose. Se for detectado algum dano no DNA que não pode ser reparado, a célula pode sofrer apoptose, ou morte celular programada. O ponto de controlo M, ou do fuso, garante que todos os cromatídeos irmãos estão corretamente ligados ao fuso mitótico na placa da metafase antes da célula entrar em anafase.
 
 <h4>Cancro: Quando o Ciclo Celular Corre Mal</h4>
 
 Os pontos de controlo do ciclo celular garantem que as células saudáveis avançam pelo do ciclo celular de forma controlada. No entanto, as células cancerígenas muitas vezes contornam esses pontos de controlo. Cada rodada sucessiva de divisão celular descontrolada produz células filhas mais danificadas. Além disso, as células cancerígenas do corpo humano podem dividir-se muito mais vezes do que as células normais, que só podem passar por cerca de 40-60 rodadas de divisão. The cell cycle is the set of steps a eukaryotic cell follows as it grows and divides. In somatic cells, it has two main stages: interphase and the mitotic phase. During interphase, the cell grows, carries out its basic metabolic functions, copies its DNA, and gets ready for mitotic cell division.

After interphase, the cell enters mitosis and cytokinesis. Mitosis divides the nuclear material, and cytokinesis divides the cytoplasm. These steps produce two daughter cells that are identical to the original parent cell.

The cell cycle is important for many body processes. It supports growth, replaces damaged cells, and helps regenerate older cells. When the cycle is disrupted by a gene mutation, uncontrolled cell division can lead to cancer.

Eukaryotic cells also use checkpoints to control cell cycle progress. The G1 checkpoint checks cell size, energy, nutrients, DNA quality, and other external factors before the cell enters S phase. The G2 checkpoint confirms that DNA has been fully copied and is not damaged before mitosis begins. If damage cannot be repaired, the cell may undergo apoptosis, or programmed cell death.

The M checkpoint, also called the spindle checkpoint, acts during mitosis. It makes sure the sister chromatids are properly attached to spindle microtubules at the metaphase plate before anaphase starts. These checkpoints help healthy cells divide in a regulated way, but cancer cells often bypass them. As a result, each round of unchecked division can create more damaged daughter cells, and cancer cells may divide far more times than normal cells, which usually complete about 40 to 60 divisions. Cancer cells also express telomerase, an enzyme that helps repair chromosome ends worn down by repeated cell division.
