Threats to Biodiversity

Embora a biodiversidade tenha mudado ao longo do tempo geológico, aumentando e diminuindo como resultado de cinco grandes extinções em massa ao longo da história da terra, a sexta extinção em massa, conhecida como a extinção atual de Holoceno, pode ser atribuído a atividades humanas. A explosão da população humana está no núcleo da perda de biodiversidade atual, resultando em perda de habitat, superexploração, a introdução de espécies invasoras, e alterações climáticas globais. O grande aumento e a necessidade de recursos para comida humana e abrigo causou perda de habitat para muitas espécies.O desmatamento e a transformação de terras para a agricultura empurra as espécies para fora de seus habitats naturais em espaços e áreas residenciais fragmentadas, com menos recursos e mais desafios de sobrevivência. Muitas espécies utilizadas para comida e remédios são superexploradas além da capacidade de recuperação das espécies. Isso é causado por uma alta demanda económica isso não é atendido pela capacidade reprodutiva da espécie.Além disso, a introdução de espécies invasoras resultou em mudanças drásticas nos ecossistemas, removendo espécies nativas através de predação e competição pelos recursos. Sem predadores naturais, as espécies invasoras causam um rápido declínio da biodiversidade. Por fim, o aumento das emissões globais de dióxido de carbono e outros gases de efeito estufa resultou em aumentos incrementais na temperatura média global.Este efeito diminuiu a quantidade de espaços habitáveis para muitas espécies e mudou o padrão migratório e outros padrões sazonais de atividade.

Houve cinco grandes eventos de extinção ao longo da história geológica, resultando na eliminação da biodiversidade, seguido por uma recuperação de espécies que se adaptaram às novas condições. Na época geológica atual, o Holoceno, há um sexto evento de extinção em andamento. Essa extinção em massa tem sido atribuída às atividades humanas e, portanto, é chamada provisoriamente de Antropoceno. Em 2019, a população humana atingiu 7,7 mil milhões de pessoas e deve chegar a 10 mil milhões até 2060.  <h4>Casos de Estudo</h4>
 
 Um caso de estudo sobre o impacto humano sobre o clima pode ser encontrado no evento da década de 1930 conhecido como Dust Bowl. Nas décadas de 1920 e 30, um grande número de agricultores mudou-se para as Grandes Planícies e limpou a terra, removendo o solo nativo coberto de plantas a fim de plantar as suas plantas agrícolas, que geralmente têm sistemas radiculares rasos. Em uma área centrada no Kansas e norte do Texas e estendendo-se para norte até ao Canadá e para o sul através do Texas, uma combinação de condições extremas de seca e práticas agrícolas mal consideradas resultou em tempestades de poeira que depositaram detritos o caminho todo até aos estados a nordeste.  Um exemplo menos radical pode ser visto no Parque Nacional de Yellowstone, nos Estados Unidos. As populações de lobos diminuíram radicalmente após o início da migração da população humana para o oeste. Como resultado, a população de animais de presas, como o antílope-americano e o veado-mula, aumentou. Como esses animais tendem a comer mudas jovens de Aspen, isso resultou em um declínio nas árvores de Aspen. Os efeitos a jusante dessa perda de árvores incluem o aumento da erosão da terra e a perda de habitat para aves e outros animais. O apoio para esta cadeia de eventos proposta vem da recente reintrodução dos lobos em Yellowstone, que se correlaciona com um ressalto observado na população de Aspen no parque. Human activity is changing biodiversity and pushing Earth toward a sixth extinction event. Earlier mass extinctions ended many species, and then new species spread into the changed environment. Today, the Holocene epoch is seeing a mass extinction linked to human actions, and it is often called the Anthropocene.

Human numbers and human biomass show how large this impact has become. In 2019, the human population reached 7.7 billion and is projected to rise to 10 billion by 2060. By biomass, humans make up about 36% of Earth’s mammals, livestock make up 60%, and wild mammals only 4%. About 70% of all birds are poultry, so only 30% are wild birds.

Several common activities threaten biodiversity. Habitat loss can happen when land is cleared for human development. Over-farming can also damage ecosystems. In addition, factories and vehicles release carbon dioxide, which adds to climate problems. To reduce these effects, people need to understand which activities cause harm and find a sustainable balance between human progress and the needs of future generations.

The Dust Bowl is one clear case of human impact on land and weather. In the 1920s and 1930s, many farmers moved to the Great Plains and clear cut the land. They removed native ground-cover plants so they could plant crops with shallow roots. Then extreme drought and poor farming practices combined to create dust storms that spread debris as far as the northeastern states. Food shortages followed, and many families had to leave their farms.

The Dust Bowl shows that farmland must be planned carefully if it is to support single crop species that are not naturally adapted to the area. A different example comes from Yellowstone National Park. After people moved west, wolf populations dropped sharply. Prey animals such as pronghorn and mule deer increased, and they ate young Aspen saplings. Aspen trees declined, which led to more erosion and less habitat for birds and other animals.

Wolves were later reintroduced to Yellowstone, and the Aspen population has since shown a rebound. If this pattern is truly caused by the return of wolves, it supports the idea that apex predators help keep ecosystems balanced. Biodiversity also matters because it helps preserve stable ecosystems, supports more predictable weather patterns, and keeps raw material available for new industrial and medical products.
