Quando alguém descobre um estereótipo negativo que afeta um grupo ao qual pertence - como ser mulher - pode se sentir ameaçado e agir de uma maneira que normalmente não faria, paradoxalmente apoiando um ciclo de feedback.

Por exemplo, no café da manhã, um pai observa que sua filha está estudando para um exame de cálculo. Ele diz a ela para não se preocupar se ela falhar, lembrando-a do estereótipo de que os homens são naturalmente melhores matemáticos do que as mulheres.

Ao chegar à aula, a menina teme que, se receber uma nota ruim, será vista por sua professora e colegas sob o estereótipo "as mulheres são ruins em matemática". Esse fenômeno é chamado de ameaça de estereótipo – um risco que ocorre quando um indivíduo se preocupa que suas ações forneçam evidências que apoiem uma suposição negativa sobre um determinado grupo social.

Ela começa o teste e está inicialmente determinada a se destacar e refutar seu pai. No entanto, com o passar do tempo, ela se sente mais ansiosa e começa a acreditar que não pode resolver os problemas devido ao seu sexo.

A maior parte de sua energia é gasta tentando se tranquilizar, o que prejudica sua memória, dificultando a concentração nas equações. Ela fica abatida e não está motivada para responder às últimas perguntas.

Isso resulta em uma profecia autorrealizável - uma crença ou expectativa arbitrária sobre um evento futuro que leva a mudanças comportamentais que então cumprem a projeção imprecisa.

Em outras palavras, a aluna falha - não porque ela seja menos inteligente do que seus colegas do sexo masculino, mas porque sua preocupação com um estereótipo enganoso prejudicou sua pontuação.

Assim, sentir-se ameaçado por um rótulo negativo pode levar a resultados observáveis que reforçam o estereótipo. Nesse caso, quando o pai da menina pede para ver sua nota - que ele previu que seria ruim - ele tem evidências diretas do estereótipo "as mulheres são ruins em matemática".

Felizmente, esses efeitos podem ser diminuídos, por exemplo, pelos pais - como a mãe da menina - negando o estereótipo e enfatizando que os exames de matemática não mostraram diferenças baseadas em gênero.

Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies

Quando mantemos um estereótipo sobre uma pessoa, temos expectativas de que ela cumprirá esse estereótipo. Uma profecia autorrealizável é uma expectativa mantida por uma pessoa que altera seu comportamento de uma forma que tende a torná-lo verdadeiro. Quando temos estereótipos sobre uma pessoa, tendemos a tratá-la de acordo com nossas expectativas. Este tratamento pode influenciar a pessoa a agir de acordo com nossas expectativas estereotipadas, confirmando assim nossas crenças estereotipadas. A pesquisa de Rosenthal e Jacobson (1968) descobriu que os alunos desfavorecidos cujos professores esperavam que eles tivessem um bom desempenho tinham notas mais altas do que os alunos desfavorecidos cujos professores esperavam que eles se saíssem mal.

Considere este exemplo de causa e efeito em uma profecia autorrealizável: se um empregador espera que um candidato a emprego abertamente gay seja incompetente, o empregador em potencial pode tratar o candidato negativamente durante a entrevista, envolvendo-se em menos conversas, fazendo pouco contato visual e geralmente se comportando friamente com o candidato (Hebl, Foster, Mannix e Dovidio, 2002). Por sua vez, o candidato a emprego perceberá que o potencial empregador não gosta dele e responderá dando respostas mais curtas às perguntas da entrevista, fazendo menos contato visual e, geralmente, desligando-se da entrevista. Após a entrevista, o empregador refletirá sobre o comportamento do candidato, que parecia frio e distante, e o empregador concluirá, com base no mau desempenho do candidato durante a entrevista, que o candidato era de fato incompetente. Assim, o estereótipo do empregador - homens gays são incompetentes e não são bons funcionários - é reforçado. Você acha que esse candidato a emprego provavelmente será contratado? Tratar os indivíduos de acordo com crenças estereotipadas pode levar ao preconceito e à discriminação.

Outra dinâmica que pode reforçar estereótipos é o viés de confirmação. Ao interagir com o alvo de nosso preconceito, tendemos a prestar atenção às informações que são consistentes com nossas expectativas estereotipadas e ignoramos as informações que são inconsistentes com nossas expectativas. Nesse processo, conhecido como viés de confirmação, buscamos informações que apóiam nossos estereótipos e ignoramos informações que são inconsistentes com nossos estereótipos (Wason & Johnson-Laird, 1972). No exemplo da entrevista de emprego, o empregador pode não ter notado que o candidato a emprego era amigável e envolvente e que forneceu respostas competentes às perguntas da entrevista no início da entrevista. Em vez disso, o empregador se concentrou no desempenho do candidato a emprego na parte posterior da entrevista, depois que o candidato mudou seu comportamento e comportamento para corresponder ao tratamento negativo do entrevistador.

Stereotypes can shape behavior through self-fulfilling prophecy and confirmation bias. A self-fulfilling prophecy happens when an expectation changes how someone acts, and that behavior helps make the expectation come true. When people hold stereotypes about others, they may treat them in ways that match those expectations. That treatment can then push the other person to act in the same way, which seems to confirm the stereotype.

A classic study by Rosenthal and Jacobson in 1968 showed this effect in schools. Disadvantaged students whose teachers expected them to do well earned higher grades than disadvantaged students whose teachers expected them to do poorly. The teacher’s belief helped shape student performance. This shows how expectations can influence outcomes in real life.

The same pattern can appear in a job interview. If an employer expects an openly gay male applicant to be incompetent, the employer may act coldly, speak less, and make little eye contact. The applicant may notice this treatment and respond with shorter answers, less eye contact, and less engagement. Afterward, the employer may judge the applicant as incompetent based on that poor interaction, which reinforces the stereotype and can make hiring less likely.

Confirmation bias can make this cycle stronger. Confirmation bias means paying attention to information that supports a stereotype and ignoring information that does not. In the interview example, the employer might overlook the applicant’s friendly and competent early answers and focus only on the later parts of the interview, after the applicant’s behavior changed. Social class stereotypes are more likely to form when information about a person is unclear. If the information is clear, stereotypes are less likely to arise.
