O estudo de genes individuais produziu observações extraordinárias em quase todos os aspetos da biologia, variando de doença e hereditariedade à agricultura e à evolução. O estudo de genomas completos são conhecidos como genómica.Envolve a sequenciação de genomas inteiros para examinar a sua organização, função, regulação, e evolução. A genómica fica entre o cruzamento da genética, da biologia molecular, e das ciências computacionais. Após a identificação da estrutura do DNA em 1953, os cientistas começaram a desenvolver técnicas para sequenciar genes individuais.Um avanço importante na sequenciação de DNA veio em 1977 quando Frederick Sanger desenvolveu um método que permitiu que genomas inteiros fossem sequenciados. Isso levou ao sequenciamento dos genomas do fermento do padeiro e da mosca da fruta usando o método de sequenciamento espingarda. O Projeto Genoma humano que começou em 1990 foi um esforço internacional de 13 anos, 2.7 bilhões de dólares que sequenciou com sucesso o primeiro genoma humano em 2003.O sucesso deste projeto levou a inovações de tecnologia em sequenciação e os genomas humanos podem agora ser sequenciados em um dia por menos de mil dólares. As grandes quantidades de dados gerados levaram à emergência do campo da bioinformática que combina matemática e técnicas da ciência da computação para organizar, analisar e comparar as vastas quantias de dados genómicos. A genómica é agora componente central da medicina personalizada, por exemplo no tratamento do câncer, e continua a desempenhar um papel fundamental em campos como a antropologia, evolução, forense, e agricultura, entre muitos outros.

Genomics

Genómica é a ciência dos genomas: é o estudo de todo o material genético de um organismo. Em humanos, o genoma consiste em informações transportadas em 23 pares de cromossomas no núcleo, bem como DNA mitocondrial. Na genómica, tanto o DNA codificado como não codificado é sequenciado e analisado. A genómica permite uma melhor compreensão de todos os seres vivos, da sua evolução e da sua diversidade. Possui uma infinidade de usos: por exemplo, construir árvores filogenéticas, melhorar a produtividade e a sustentabilidade das culturas, auxiliar investigações criminais, identificar genes associados a doenças ou visar o tratamento ideal para pacientes com cancro.
 
 Nos últimos 30 anos, desenvolvimentos tecnológicos significativos no sequenciamento de DNA ocorreram, em particular, graças ao esforço internacional do Projeto do Genoma Humano. Existe agora tecnologia para sequenciar 60 mil milhões de bases de DNA, que é 20 vezes o tamanho de um genoma humano. Com essa abundância de informações e megadados, cientistas da computação e bioinformática trabalham lado a lado com biólogos para recolher, armazenar e analisar os resultados de sequenciamento de DNA, permitindo que os dados sejam acedidos com segurança.
 
 O sucesso da genómica abriu caminho para outros métodos em grande escala para investigar sistemas biológicos na sua totalidade. Estudos genómicos podem ser agora complementados por outros estudos de "ómica" a fim de recolher dados sobre conjuntos vivos a todos os níveis: espécies, populações, indivíduos, células, proteínas, RNA, DNA. Transcriptómica é o estudo de como a expressão geral dos genes varia em diferentes condições experimentais ou patológicas. Proteómica é o estudo de todas as proteínas que constituem um organismo ou sistema. Metabolómica é o estudo de todos os metabolitos (açúcar, gorduras, outras moléculas) contidos em um determinado sistema biológico e as suas interações. Indissociável da bioinformática, a "ómica" permite uma visão global de conjuntos de vida complexos no seu ambiente e, como tal, abre o caminho para a medicina personalizada.

Genomics studies the full set of genetic material in an organism. In humans, that genome includes the DNA carried in 23 pairs of chromosomes in the nucleus, along with mitochondrial DNA. Genomics looks at both coding DNA and non-coding DNA, which helps scientists study how living things are built and how they differ.

This field is useful in many areas of biology and medicine. Scientists use genomics to build phylogenetic trees, improve crop productivity and sustainability, help with criminal investigations, find genes linked to disease, and support better cancer treatment choices. It also gives researchers a clearer view of evolution and biological diversity.

DNA sequencing has changed genomics over the past 30 years. Major progress came from the international Human Genome Project, which helped drive faster and more powerful sequencing methods. Today, technology can sequence about 60 billion DNA bases, or around 20 times the size of a human genome.

That amount of data requires bioinformatics, the use of computers to manage and study biological information. Computer scientists and bioinformaticians work with biologists to collect, store, analyze, and secure DNA sequencing results. Their teamwork makes it possible to handle large-scale genomic data.

Genomics also led to other large-scale &quot;omics&quot; studies. Transcriptomics examines how gene expression changes under different experimental or disease conditions. Proteomics studies all the proteins in an organism or system, and metabolomics studies the metabolites, such as sugars, fats, and other molecules, and how they interact.

Together, these omics fields give a broad view of living systems at the level of species, populations, individuals, cells, proteins, RNA, and DNA. Because they rely on bioinformatics, they help scientists understand complex biology in context. They also support the growth of personalized medicine.
