Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter

As características que nos ajudam a distinguir um tipo de matéria de outro são denominadas de propriedades. A matéria apresenta dois tipos de propriedades:físicas e químicas. As propriedades físicas da matéria podem ser medidas e observadas sem alterar a composição ou a identidade da matéria.O odor, o sabor, a cor, a aparência, a dureza, a densidade, os pontos de fusão e de ebulição, e a condutividade elétrica são exemplos de propriedades físicas. Algumas destas propriedades físicas podem ser observadas sem alteração do estado físico da matéria. Assim, quando dizemos que o gás hélio é mais leve do que o ar, estamos a referir-nos a uma propriedade física.Da mesma forma, o cheiro da gasolina também é uma propriedade física. Outras propriedades físicas só podem ser observadas quando a matéria sofre alterações físicas. Por exemplo, o ouro puro no seu estado sólido é composto por átomos de ouro bem agrupados.Mas quando é derretido a uma temperatura elevada, muda o seu estado de sólido para líquido. No entanto, este líquido ainda é composto por átomos de ouro, portanto, esta é uma mudança física. Do mesmo modo, quando a água líquida congela em gelo sólido, a composição química tanto da água como do gelo continua a ser a mesma.Assim, as alterações físicas apenas alteram o estado da matéria ou das condições físicas, sem alterar a composição química. Triturar, moer, fatiar, misturar, magnetizar, ou desmagnetizar são outras formas comuns de alterar o estado físico da matéria. As propriedades químicas da matéria, por outro lado, são características que só podem ser medidas e observadas quando a substância tem uma alteração na sua composição química.Corrosividade, inflamabilidade, toxicidade, acidez, ou reatividade química são exemplos de propriedades químicas da matéria. A fim de identificar uma propriedade química, procuramos uma alteração química. As alterações químicas envolvem reações químicas e são frequentemente observadas através da mudança de cor ou odor.Por exemplo, quando uma moeda de cobre é exposta ao ar e à água há uma alteração química. O cobre é submetido a uma série de reações químicas, uma das quais é mostrada aqui, para formar uma camada de patina azul-esverdeada sobre uma moeda naturalmente castanha. Assim, as alterações químicas produzem novas formas de matéria que diferem da matéria presente antes da alteração.Por exemplo, a inflamabilidade da gasolina é uma propriedade química evidente a partir das alterações químicas na composição da gasolina quando esta queima, transformando a gasolina numa substância totalmente nova principalmente dióxido de carbono e água.

<h4>Propriedades Físicas da Matéria </h4>

Uma propriedade física é uma característica da matéria que não está associada a uma mudança na sua composição química. Exemplos familiares de propriedades físicas incluem densidade, cor, dureza, pontos de fusão e ebulição, e condutividade elétrica. Podemos observar algumas propriedades físicas, como densidade e cor, sem alterar o estado físico da matéria observada. Outras propriedades físicas, tais como a temperatura de fusão do ferro ou a temperatura de congelação da água, só podem ser observadas quando a matéria sofre uma alteração física. 

Uma alteração física é uma alteração do estado ou das propriedades da matéria sem qualquer alteração da sua composição química (as identidades das substâncias contidas na matéria). Observamos uma mudança física quando, por exemplo, a cera derrete, o açúcar se dissolve em café e o vapor se condensa em água líquida. Outros exemplos de alterações físicas incluem a magnetização e desmagnetização de metais (como é feito com etiquetas de segurança anti-roubo comuns) e a moagem de sólidos em pós. Em cada um destes exemplos, verifica-se uma alteração do estado físico, forma, ou propriedades da substância, mas não uma alteração da sua composição química.

<h4>Propriedades Químicas da Matéria</h4>

A alteração de um tipo de matéria para outro tipo (ou a incapacidade de mudar) é uma propriedade química. Exemplos de propriedades químicas incluem inflamabilidade, toxicidade, acidez, reatividade (muitos tipos), e calor de combustão. O ferro, por exemplo, combina-se com o oxigénio na presença de água para formar ferrugem; o crómio não oxida. A nitroglicerina é muito perigosa porque explode facilmente; o néon não apresenta quase nenhum perigo porque é muito pouco reativo. 

Para identificar uma propriedade química, procuramos uma mudança química. Uma mudança química produz sempre um ou mais tipos de matéria que diferem da matéria presente antes da mudança. A formação de ferrugem é uma mudança química porque a ferrugem é um tipo diferente de matéria do que o ferro, o oxigénio e a água presentes antes da formação da ferrugem. A explosão da nitroglicerina é uma alteração química, uma vez que os gases produzidos são tipos de matéria muito diferentes da substância original. Outros exemplos de mudanças químicas incluem reações que são realizadas em um laboratório (como o cobre a reagir com ácido nítrico), todas as formas de combustão (queima), o amadurecimento dos frutos, e os alimentos a serem cozidos, digeridos, ou a apodrecerem.

Matter can be identified by its properties, which are the features that help us tell one substance from another. These properties fall into two main groups: physical properties and chemical properties. Understanding the difference helps explain how matter changes.

A physical property is a feature of matter that is not linked to a change in chemical composition. Examples include density, color, hardness, melting point, boiling point, and electrical conductivity. Some physical properties can be observed without changing the state of the matter, such as density and color. Others appear only during a physical change, like the melting temperature of iron or the freezing temperature of water.

A physical change alters the state or form of matter without changing what the substance is made of. Wax melting, sugar dissolving in coffee, and steam condensing into liquid water are all physical changes. Magnetizing and demagnetizing metals, such as in anti-theft security tags, and grinding solids into powders are also physical changes. In each case, the material looks or behaves differently, but its chemical composition stays the same.

Chemical properties describe whether matter can change into a different type of matter, or resist that change. Common chemical properties include flammability, toxicity, acidity, reactivity, and heat of combustion. Iron reacts with oxygen and water to form rust, while chromium does not oxidize. Nitroglycerin explodes easily, but neon is very unreactive.

To identify a chemical property, we look for a chemical change. A chemical change produces one or more new kinds of matter that are different from the starting material. Rust formation is a chemical change because rust is not the same as iron, oxygen, or water. Nitroglycerin exploding is also a chemical change because the gases produced are different from the original substance. Other chemical changes include copper reacting with nitric acid, burning, fruit ripening, and food being cooked, digested, or rotting.
