Os halogenetos de alquila, ou haloalcanos, são compostos orgânicos compostos por um grupo alquila e um átomo de halogênio ligado a um carbono hibridizado sp3.
Cada átomo de carbono é definido por sua proximidade com o átomo de halogênio. O carbono ligado diretamente ao halogênio é denotado "carbono alfa"; o carbono próximo a ele é chamado de "beta-carbono" e assim por diante.
Dependendo do número de grupos alquila no carbono alfa, os haletos de alquila são classificados como primários, secundários e terciários.
A nomenclatura dos haletos de alquila segue regras IUPAC semelhantes às dos alcanos. Os halogênios são considerados substituintes e denominados fluoro-, cloro-, bromo- e iodo-.
Primeiro, conte os carbonos na cadeia mais longa. Aqui, cinco corresponde ao pentano. Em segundo lugar, encontre e nomeie os substituintes. Aqui é bromo, cloro e metil.
Em seguida, numere a cadeia pai e atribua um localizador aos substituintes, dando-lhes o menor número possível. Por fim, monte os substituintes em ordem alfabética. Este composto é chamado de 4-bromo-1-cloro-4-metil pentano.
Se a cadeia contém uma ligação dupla, a ligação dupla tem precedência e obtém o menor número dando ao composto 3-fluoro-1-buteno.
Se uma molécula é cíclica, quiral e com múltiplos substituintes, os substituintes também recebem o menor locante possível e os grupos são ordenados em ordem alfabética. Os estereocentros são indicados no início do nome, dando (1R,2 R)-3-butil-1,2-dicloro-5-etilciclohexano.
Os haletos de alquila são usados como blocos de construção em sínteses devido à sua reatividade. Descendo o grupo 17, o tamanho do átomo de halogênio e o comprimento da ligação aumentam, enquanto a eletronegatividade e a basicidade diminuem.
A maior eletronegatividade dos halogênios leva à retirada da densidade eletrônica do carbono adjacente, tornando o carbono alfa eletrofílico e, portanto, mais reativo.
A reatividade do haleto de alquila é ainda mais influenciada pela estabilidade da base conjugada do halogênio. Iodeto, brometo e cloreto são bases conjugadas estáveis, mas fracas, de seus fortes ácidos hidrohálicos. Devido à sua estabilidade, eles podem ser mais facilmente substituídos por uma base mais forte, tornando-os bons grupos de saída.

O átomo de carbono em um haleto de alquila está ligado ao átomo de halogênio, que é hibridizado sp3 e exibe uma forma tetraédrica.

Diferente dos haletos de alquila, os compostos nos quais um átomo de halogênio está ligado a um átomo de carbono com hibridização sp2 de uma ligação dupla carbono-carbono (C=C) são chamados de haletos de vinila. Já os haletos de arila são compostos nos quais um átomo de halogênio está ligado a um átomo de carbono com hibridização sp2 de um anel aromático.

Além disso, dependendo do grau de substituição no átomo de carbono que contém o halogênio, os haletos de alquila são classificados em haletos de alquila primários, secundários e terciários. O carbono ligado a um átomo de halogênio é chamado de carbono α. O átomo de carbono ligado ao carbono α é denominado carbono β. Os carbonos adjacentes são posteriormente denotados pelo alfabeto grego (γ, δ e assim por diante).

A nomenclatura dos haletos de alquila segue as regras gerais da IUPAC de química orgânica:

Reatividade e Aplicações

Os haletos de alquila são compostos versáteis que servem como solventes, pesticidas e intermediários na preparação de corantes, medicamentos e polímeros sintéticos. A reatividade química dos haletos de alquila varia dependendo da classificação estrutural. Eles são classificados em haletos de alquila primários, secundários e terciários, dependendo do grau de substituição no carbono que contém o halogênio.

Além disso, a eletronegatividade do átomo de halogênio desempenha um papel significativo na reatividade dos haletos de alquila. Exceto o iodo, outros halogênios têm eletronegatividade significativamente maior que o carbono. Devido às diferenças de eletronegatividade entre os átomos de carbono e halogênio, a ligação covalente entre os átomos é polarizada; assim, o carbono carrega uma carga parcial positiva e o átomo de halogênio uma carga parcial negativa. Consequentemente, o carbono ligado ao halogênio é um eletrófilo.

Na tabela periódica, descendo a família dos halogênios, a eletronegatividade diminui; inversamente, o tamanho do átomo de halogênio aumenta. Assim, o comprimento da ligação carbono-haleto aumenta enquanto a força e a polaridade da ligação diminuem do flúor para o iodo, facilitando a quebra da ligação.

Além desses fatores, a estabilidade relativa das bases conjugadas correspondentes, ou ânions haleto, também influencia a natureza química dos haletos de alquila. A estabilidade dos ânions haleto pode ser medida em relação à acidez relativa dos ácidos hidrohálicos. O ácido hidrohálico mais forte, o iodeto de hidrogênio, tem um pKa de -11. O que significa que se dissocia totalmente para formar a base conjugada mais estável, o íon iodeto e um próton. Assim, o iodo é um excelente grupo de saída. Exceto o ácido fluorídrico com pKa de 3,2, outros ácidos hidrohálicos têm valores de pKa inferiores a 0, tornando-os ácidos fortes com bases conjugadas fracas e estabilizadas, que são excelentes grupos de saída.

Alkyl halides are halogen-substituted alkanes. In these compounds, one or more hydrogen atoms in an alkane is replaced by a halogen atom such as fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine. The carbon bonded to the halogen is sp3-hybridized and has a tetrahedral shape.

Not every carbon-halogen compound is an alkyl halide. If the halogen is attached to an sp2-hybridized carbon in a carbon-carbon double bond, the compound is a vinyl halide. If the halogen is attached to an sp2-hybridized carbon in an aromatic ring, the compound is an aryl halide. Alkyl halides are also grouped as primary, secondary, or tertiary based on how substituted the carbon bearing the halogen is.

The carbon attached to the halogen is called the alpha-carbon. The carbon next to it is the beta-carbon. The nearby carbons are then labeled with Greek letters such as gamma and delta. Alkyl halides are named using standard IUPAC rules. First, identify the longest carbon chain and name it. Then name the substituents, assign locants, and list the substituents in alphabetical order.

Alkyl halides are useful as solvents, pesticides, and starting materials for dyes, drugs, and synthetic polymers. Their reactivity depends on their structure and on the halogen atom. Because halogens are usually more electronegative than carbon, the carbon-halogen bond is polarized. This gives the carbon a partial positive charge, so it acts as an electrophile.

Halogen trends also matter. Moving down the halogen family, electronegativity decreases and atomic size increases. As a result, the carbon-halogen bond gets longer, weaker, and less polar from fluorine to iodine, so it is easier to break. The stability of the matching halide anion also affects reactivity. Hydroiodic acid is the strongest hydrohalic acid, with a pKa of -11, so iodide is a very stable conjugate base and an excellent leaving group. With the exception of hydrofluoric acid, which has a pKa of 3.2, the other hydrohalic acids have pKa values below 0 and form weak, stabilized conjugate bases that leave easily.
