Os compostos aromáticos são hidrocarbonetos com ligações π conjugadas encerradas em um anel. O benzeno e seus derivados são os exemplos mais conhecidos de compostos aromáticos.
Originalmente, os derivados do benzeno eram isolados de óleos naturais produzidos por plantas e árvores e eram chamados de 'aromáticos' devido ao seu odor característico.
Por exemplo, benzaldeído de amêndoas e cerejas, tolueno do bálsamo de Tolu e eugenol do cravo têm odores distintos.
Com o tempo, o termo aromático continuou a descrever todos os derivados do benzeno, independentemente de serem perfumados ou não. Por exemplo, o analgésico aspirina contém ácido acetilsalicílico, um composto aromático inodoro.
Estruturalmente, os compostos aromáticos são hidrocarbonetos altamente insaturados e exibem comportamento químico diferente dos alcenos, alcinos e polienos de cadeia aberta.
As principais fontes de compostos aromáticos simples são o alcatrão de carvão e o petróleo.
A destilação fracionada de alcatrão de carvão produz muitos compostos aromáticos, como benzeno, tolueno, xileno, naftaleno e outros.
Da mesma forma, durante o refino de petróleo, os alcanos são convertidos em compostos aromáticos.

Em geral, o termo “aromático” indica um cheiro ou fragrância agradável de flores frescas, café recém-preparado, etc. No início da história da química orgânica, muitos derivados do benzeno foram isolados dos óleos de odor agradável das plantas. Por exemplo, a vanilina foi isolada do óleo de baunilha, o salicilato de metila do óleo de gaultéria e o cinamaldeído do óleo de canela. Todos tinham um odor agradável; daí o nome aromático.

Em 1825, Faraday isolou o benzeno do gás de iluminação comprimido (o combustível queimado nas lâmpadas a gás) e chamou-o de “bicarbureto de hidrogênio”. Ele também realizou uma análise elementar do composto e observou uma proporção de 1:1 entre hidrogênio e carbono.

Mais tarde, Eilhardt Mitscherlich sintetizou o benzeno a partir do ácido benzoico (isolado da goma benjoim) e do óxido de cálcio em 1834. Ao realizar medições de densidade de vapor, ele mostrou que a fórmula molecular do benzeno era C_6H_6. Como o novo composto era derivado da goma benjoim, ele o chamou de Benzina, hoje conhecido como benzeno. É usado como solvente de laboratório.

O termo “aromático” ainda é usado para descrever todos os derivados de benzeno, sejam eles perfumados ou não. Muitos dos compostos naturais e farmacêuticos são aromáticos. Por exemplo, a estrona é um esteróide, a atorvastatina (Lipitor) é um medicamento para reduzir o colesterol, o Zoloft é um antidepressivo e o Serevent, usado para tratar a asma, são compostos aromáticos.

Os compostos aromáticos são obtidos principalmente do carvão e do petróleo. O carvão produz alcatrão de carvão quando aquecido a 1000 °C na ausência de ar. O alcatrão de carvão, por destilação fracionada, produz muitos hidrocarbonetos aromáticos, como benzeno, tolueno, dimetilbenzeno (xileno), naftaleno, bifenil, indeno, antraceno, etc.

Contudo, os compostos aromáticos não podem ser obtidos diretamente do petróleo. Durante o refino do petróleo, os alcanos são convertidos em compostos aromáticos na presença de um catalisador a 500°C sob alta pressão.

Aromatic compounds are linked to both pleasant smells and important chemical structures. The word aromatic first came from fragrant natural sources such as fresh flowers and spices. Early organic chemists isolated benzene derivatives from oils of plants, including vanillin from vanilla, methyl salicylate from wintergreen, and cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon.

The history of benzene also helped shape the idea of aromatic compounds. In 1825, Faraday isolated benzene from compressed illuminating gas, which was used in gaslights. He called it bicarburet of hydrogen and found a 1:1 ratio of hydrogen to carbon. In 1834, Eilhardt Mitscherlich made benzene from benzoic acid, which comes from gum benzoin, and calcium oxide. He used vapor density measurements to show that benzene has the formula C6H6, and he named it Benzin, now called benzene.

Today, the term aromatic includes many benzene derivatives, even when they do not smell pleasant. Benzene itself is used as a laboratory solvent. Many natural and pharmaceutical compounds are aromatic, including estrone, atorvastatin (Lipitor), Zoloft, and Serevent.

Aromatic compounds are mainly obtained from coal and petroleum. When coal is heated to 1000 °C without air, it forms coal tar. Fractional distillation of coal tar gives aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, biphenyl, indene, and anthracene. Aromatic compounds are not taken directly from petroleum, but petroleum refining can convert alkanes into aromatic compounds with a catalyst at 500 °C under high pressure.
