Compostos aromáticos cíclicos com um ou mais heteroátomos são denominados compostos aromáticos heterocíclicos.
Os compostos aromáticos heterocíclicos de cinco membros incluem pirrol, furano, tiofeno e imidazol, tendo nitrogênio, oxigênio e enxofre como heteroátomos.
Nesses compostos planares, todos os átomos são hibridizados sp2, incluindo o heteroátomo.
Como é evidente a partir da estrutura de ligação π do pirrol, um elétron π de cada carbono e um par de elétrons solitários do heteroátomo ocupam os orbitais 2p não hibridizados.
Esses cinco orbitais se sobrepõem, formando um circuito fechado de 6 π elétrons, tornando o pirrol aromático.

Compostos aromáticos heterocíclicos são compostos cíclicos aromáticos e possuem um ou mais heteroátomos - átomos diferentes de carbono, no anel. Dependendo do número de átomos presentes no anel, eles podem ter cinco ou seis membros. Exemplos de compostos aromáticos heterocíclicos de cinco membros incluem pirrol, furano, tiofeno e imidazol. O pirrol possui um átomo de nitrogênio com um único par de elétrons solitários. Furano e tiofeno têm um heteroátomo de oxigênio e um heteroátomo de enxofre, respectivamente. Ambos possuem dois pares solitários de elétrons. O imidazol difere dos outros três por ter dois nitrogênios como heteroátomos, com um único par de elétrons em cada átomo de nitrogênio. Em todos os quatro compostos heterocíclicos, todos os átomos são hibridizados sp^2, incluindo os heteroátomos.

Consequentemente, todos os átomos têm um orbital p não hibridizado perpendicular ao plano do anel. Em cada caso, todos os átomos de carbono contribuem com um elétron π, e os heteroátomos contribuem com um único par de elétrons, ocupando o orbital p não hibridizado. Five-membered aromatic rings with heteroatoms are cyclic compounds that contain one or more atoms other than carbon in the ring. They are aromatic and can have either five or six atoms in the ring. Common examples include pyrrole, furan, thiophene, and imidazole.

These rings differ by the heteroatom present. Pyrrole has one nitrogen atom with one lone pair of electrons. Furan has one oxygen atom, and thiophene has one sulfur atom. Both furan and thiophene have two lone pairs of electrons. Imidazole has two nitrogen atoms, and each nitrogen has one lone pair of electrons.

In these compounds, the ring atoms are sp2 hybridized, including the heteroatoms. That means each atom has one unhybridized p orbital standing perpendicular to the ring plane. The carbon atoms each contribute one pi electron. The heteroatoms contribute one lone pair from the p orbital, which helps complete the aromatic sextet and forms a closed loop of 6 pi electrons.

Not every lone pair takes part in aromaticity. In furan and thiophene, the extra lone pair on oxygen or sulfur stays in an sp2 hybrid orbital and does not join the pi system. In imidazole, the lone pair on the second nitrogen also stays in an sp2 hybrid orbital. As a result, only one nitrogen lone pair is part of the aromatic sextet.
