Conversion of Units

A conversão de unidades é o processo de conversão de unidades de uma unidade para outra.
O sistema SI de unidades são as unidades padrão universalmente aceitas para grandezas físicas. Mas alguns países, incluindo os EUA, às vezes usam um conjunto diferente de unidades conhecidas como unidades inglesas.
Muitas vezes, uma única quantidade física pode ser expressa em unidades diferentes, mas equivalentes. Considere uma girafa de 500 centímetros de altura. Para expressar sua altura em metros, tanto os números quanto as unidades devem ser multiplicados pelo fator de conversão apropriado.

Ou, ao procurar por instruções sobre como chegar a um local, pode ser interessante saber quantas milhas teremos que percorrer a pé. Nesse caso, seria necessário converter unidades de pés, ou metros, para milhas.

O primeiro passo na conversão de unidades é listar as unidades fornecidas e as unidades necessárias para a conversão. O segundo passo é determinar um fator de conversão relacionado à unidade dada e à unidade necessária. O fator de conversão é definido como a razão que expressa quantas unidades de uma unidade são iguais à outra unidade. Por exemplo, existem 1.000 metros em 1 quilômetro. Ao fazer uma conversão, certifique-se de que as unidades na conversão de unidades sejam canceladas corretamente.

Um exemplo bem conhecido da importância da conversão de unidades é a Mars Climate Orbiter. A NASA lançou essa sonda em 11 de dezembro de 1998. No entanto, em 23 de setembro de 1999, a NASA perdeu contato com a sonda ao tentar guiá-la em sua órbita planejada em torno de Marte. Investigações subsequentes revelaram que as unidades nos dois programas usados para registrar e conduzir o propulsor estavam dessincronizadas. Esse erro fez com que a sonda seguisse uma trajetória muito diferente daquela projetada pela NASA, fazendo com que ela queimasse na atmosfera marciana ou fosse lançada para o espaço. Unit conversion lets you change a measurement from one unit to another. It is useful in everyday life, such as when a cookbook gives amounts in liters or ounces and you need cups instead. It also helps when directions use feet or meters, but you want to know the distance in miles.

The first step is to list the given unit and the unit you need. The second step is to choose a conversion factor, which is a ratio that shows how many of one unit equal another unit. For example, 1,000 meters equal 1 kilometer.

During the conversion, the units must cancel correctly. This keeps the calculation organized and gives the right final unit. Unit conversion is important in science and engineering because small unit mistakes can lead to major problems.

A well-known example is the Mars Climate Orbiter. NASA launched the probe on December 11, 1998, and lost contact with it on September 23, 1999 while trying to place it in orbit around Mars. Investigators found that the two programs used different units for recording and driving the thruster. That mismatch sent the probe on the wrong path, where it burned up in the Martian atmosphere or flew out into space. The error cost hundreds of millions of dollars and much time for the scientists and engineers involved.
