Average Acceleration

A aceleração é definida como a mudança na velocidade com o tempo. É uma grandeza vetorial e envolve uma mudança de magnitude ou direção ou ambas.
Por exemplo, uma mulher está andando a 5 km/h em direção ao leste. Ela para e retorna, caminhando a 5 km/h em direção ao oeste. Aqui, a velocidade da mulher mudou devido a uma mudança de direção, embora sua magnitude seja a mesma em ambas as direções, o que resultou em aceleração.
A aceleração é expressa em metros por segundo ao quadrado e pode ser interpretada a partir do gráfico de velocidade versus tempo, onde a velocidade está no eixo y e o tempo está no eixo x.
Por exemplo, uma mulher está andando em uma estrada. No ponto P1, ela tem uma velocidade de v1x no tempo t1. E depois de algum tempo em t2, sua velocidade é v2x no ponto P2. A mudança em sua velocidade é dada por Δv em um intervalo de tempo de Δt.
Assim, a aceleração média da mulher que se move do ponto P1 para o P2 é a mudança no componente x da velocidade, dividido pelo intervalo de tempo. Também é dado pela inclinação da linha P1P2.

A importância de compreender a aceleração se estende tanto para nossas experiências diárias, assim como para as vastas fronteiras do espaço sideral e para o minúsculo mundo da física subatômica. Em conversas cotidianas, acelerar significa aumentar a velocidade. Por exemplo, estamos familiarizados com a aceleração do nosso carro; quanto mais pressionamos o pedal do acelerador, mais rapidamente aceleramos. Quanto maior a aceleração, maior é a mudança na velocidade durante um determinado período de tempo. A aceleração é amplamente observada na física experimental. Em experimentos com acelerador de partículas lineares, por exemplo, partículas subatômicas são aceleradas a velocidades muito altas em colisões experimentais, o que nos fornece informações sobre a estrutura do mundo subatômico e sobre a origem do universo. No espaço, os raios cósmicos são partículas subatômicas que foram aceleradas a energias muito altas em supernovas (estrelas massivas explodindo) e núcleos galácticos ativos. Average acceleration describes how velocity changes over time. In physics, acceleration is not just about speeding up. It also includes slowing down and changing direction. Since velocity is a vector, it has both magnitude and direction.

A change in velocity can come from a change in speed, a change in direction, or both. For example, a runner may travel at 10 km/h due east, stop, reverse direction, and then continue at 10 km/h due west. Even though the speed is the same, the velocity has changed because the direction is different. That change in velocity means there is acceleration.

This idea appears in many settings. In everyday life, it helps explain a car’s motion when the driver presses harder on the gas pedal. In experimental physics, linear particle accelerator experiments use acceleration to push subatomic particles to very high velocities for collision studies. Those experiments help scientists learn about the structure of the subatomic world and the origin of the universe.

Acceleration also matters in space. Cosmic rays are subatomic particles that have been accelerated to very high energies in supernovas and active galactic nuclei. Studying how these rays are accelerated is important because they carry highly penetrating radiation. That radiation can damage electronics on spacecraft.
