Position and Displacement Vectors

Considere uma mosca em movimento. Para localizar sua posição em um espaço tridimensional, um sistema de coordenadas cartesianas é usado e os vetores unitários ao longo do eixo fornecem sua direção.

Para descrever o movimento de um objeto, primeiro é necessário descrever a sua posição (onde ele está em determinado momento). Um referencial é um conjunto arbitrário de eixos a partir dos quais a posição e o movimento de um objeto são descritos. Além disso, diversos tipos importantes de movimento ocorrem apenas em duas dimensões, ou seja, em um plano. Esses movimentos podem ser descritos com duas componentes de posição, velocidade e aceleração. Se um objeto se move em relação a um referencial, então a posição do objeto muda; essa mudança de posição é chamada de deslocamento. A palavra deslocamento implica que um objeto se moveu ou foi deslocado. Como o deslocamento indica direção, ele é um vetor e pode ser tanto positivo quanto negativo, dependendo da escolha da direção. Além disso, uma análise de movimento pode ter muitos deslocamentos embutidos e muitas aplicações em física podem ter uma série de deslocamentos. Describing motion starts with position. Position tells where an object is at a particular time. It must be measured relative to a frame of reference, which is an arbitrary set of axes used to describe position and motion.

Earth is often used as a frame of reference. It helps describe an object’s location in relation to stationary objects on Earth. Many important motions also take place in two dimensions, or in a plane. In those cases, position, velocity, and acceleration can each be described with two components.

When an object moves relative to a frame of reference, its position changes. This change in position is called displacement. Displacement shows direction, so it is a vector. Depending on the chosen direction, it can be positive or negative.

Motion can include many separate displacements. In many physics problems, these displacements are combined into a total displacement. The total displacement is the sum of the individual displacements, and it should be found carefully using vector addition.
