Average and Instantaneous Velocity Vectors

A velocidade média é dada como a razão entre o deslocamento e o intervalo de tempo durante esse deslocamento. Em um espaço bidimensional, o vetor de deslocamento, Δr, representa a mudança de posição.
Se a velocidade for considerada em um determinado momento, o tempo decorrido se aproxima de zero. Agora, o limite da velocidade média se aproxima da velocidade instantânea e é igual à derivada do vetor posição em relação ao tempo.
A direção do vetor de velocidade instantânea em qualquer ponto é sempre ao longo de uma linha tangente ao caminho naquele ponto.
Os componentes da velocidade em um espaço bidimensional são as derivadas de tempo das coordenadas x e y. Assim, o vetor velocidade instantânea é a soma envolvendo dois vetores unitários.
Ao descrever um movimento tridimensional, o eixo z também está envolvido, e o vetor velocidade é representado usando três vetores unitários.
No vetor velocidade instantânea, a magnitude representa a velocidade do objeto.

Para calcular outras grandezas físicas na cinemática, a variável tempo deve ser introduzida. A variável tempo nos permite não apenas afirmar onde um objeto está (sua posição) durante seu movimento, mas também quão rápido ele está se movendo. A velocidade com que um objeto se move é dada pela taxa com que sua posição muda com o tempo. Para cada posição, um tempo específico é atribuído. Se os detalhes do movimento em cada instante não forem importantes, a taxa é geralmente expressa como a velocidade média v. Esse vetor velocidade é simplesmente o deslocamento total entre dois pontos dividido pelo tempo necessário para percorrer essa distância, também conhecido como tempo decorrido.

No entanto, como os objetos no mundo real se movem continuamente através do espaço e do tempo, a velocidade de um objeto em qualquer ponto específico é um parâmetro importante. A quantidade que nos diz com que rapidez um objeto está se movendo em qualquer ponto ao longo de seu caminho é conhecida como velocidade instantânea, frequentemente chamada apenas de velocidade. Position change and instant velocity are key ideas in kinematics. To describe motion, time must be included. Time tells us where an object is and how fast it is moving.

The speed of an object comes from how its position changes with time. Each position is tied to a specific time. When the details of motion at each instant are not important, the rate is given as average velocity. Average velocity is a vector. It equals the total displacement between two points divided by the elapsed time.

Real objects move continuously through space and time. Because of that, velocity at a single point along the path is also important. This is called instantaneous velocity, and it is often just called velocity. It is the average velocity between two points in the limit where the time interval, and therefore the displacement, approaches zero. Like average velocity, instantaneous velocity is a vector with units of length per time.

It must be measured relative to a frame of reference, which is an arbitrary set of axes used to describe position and motion. Earth is often used as a frame of reference.
