Gravitational Potential Energy

A energia potencial gravitacional é a energia armazenada em um objeto devido à sua posição no campo gravitacional.
Matematicamente, é definido como o produto do peso e da altura de um objeto acima do solo.
Assim, a energia potencial gravitacional de uma bola de massa m pendurada a uma altura y do solo é mgy.
Por exemplo, no hóquei no gelo, se um disco de massa m segue um caminho parabólico após o arremesso, então a energia potencial gravitacional no ponto B é mgy, onde y é a altura do disco do solo.
Quando o disco se move do ponto A para o B, a mudança na energia potencial gravitacional é positiva à medida que a energia potencial gravitacional aumenta e é igual ao negativo do trabalho realizado.
Da mesma forma, quando o disco se move do ponto B para C, a energia potencial gravitacional diminui e o trabalho realizado pela força gravitacional é positivo.
Assim, quando um corpo se move para cima, a energia potencial gravitacional aumenta e diminui quando o corpo se move para baixo.

A energia potencial não é apenas uma propriedade de cada objeto, mas também uma propriedade das interações entre os objetos em um sistema específico. Para cada tipo de interação presente em um sistema, há um tipo correspondente de energia potencial. A energia potencial total do sistema é a soma das energias potenciais de todos os objetos. A energia potencial pode ser classificada em duas categorias principais: energia potencial gravitacional e energia potencial elástica. A energia potencial associada ao peso de um corpo e sua altura acima do solo é chamada energia potencial gravitacional.

A força gravitacional sobre cada partícula (ou corpo) é simplesmente o seu peso (mg) próximo à superfície da Terra, agindo em direção ao centro da Terra. De acordo com a terceira lei de Newton, cada partícula exerce uma força de igual magnitude e direção oposta na Terra. Além disso, a segunda lei de Newton nos diz que a magnitude da aceleração produzida por cada uma dessas forças na Terra é (mg) dividido pela massa da Terra. Como a razão da massa de qualquer objeto comum para a massa da Terra é extremamente pequena, o movimento da Terra pode ser completamente negligenciado. Gravitational potential energy depends on an object’s weight and its height above the ground. It is one part of the total potential energy of a system, which comes from the interactions between objects. In a system, the total potential energy is the sum of the potential energies for all the objects.

Potential energy is usually grouped into two main categories: gravitational potential energy and elastic potential energy. Gravitational potential energy describes the energy tied to a body’s weight and position near Earth. Elastic potential energy is the other major category, and it comes from a different kind of interaction.

Near Earth’s surface, the gravitational force on a body is its weight, or mg, and it points toward the center of Earth. By Newton’s third law, the body pulls on Earth with an equal force in the opposite direction. Newton’s second law shows that Earth’s acceleration from this force is mg divided by Earth’s mass, but Earth is so massive compared with ordinary objects that its motion can be neglected.

Because of this, we treat the situation as a single-particle system in a uniform gravitational field. The work done by Earth’s gravitational force near the surface depends on the object’s mass, the acceleration due to gravity, and the change in height. That work is the negative of the change in gravitational potential energy.
