Considere um tronco de madeira flutuando na superfície da água. Quando é empurrado para baixo e pode balançar para cima e para baixo, ele oscila em torno de sua posição média. Com o tempo, a força dissipativa reduz a amplitude da oscilação e pode ser descrita pela equação do movimento harmônico amortecido.
Na resolução, se a parte imaginária for diferente de zero, a solução geral para a equação diferencial em relação à posição e à frequência angular dentro do envelope de decaimento exponencial dependente do tempo é obtida.
Dependendo da frequência angular, o sistema apresenta diferentes tipos de condições de amortecimento. Quando a força de amortecimento é baixa, a frequência angular se assemelha à frequência natural. Portanto, em condições subamortecidas, o sistema oscila com amplitude de decaimento após fazer alguns ciclos possíveis.
Em condições críticas de amortecimento, as forças de amortecimento e restauração são iguais e a frequência angular torna-se zero, fazendo com que as oscilações do sistema desapareçam exponencialmente.
Por outro lado, em condições superamortecidas, a força de amortecimento é relativamente grande, o que faz com que o sistema atinja lentamente o equilíbrio.

Se a quantidade de amortecimento em um sistema for gradualmente aumentada, o período e a frequência começam a ser afetados porque o amortecimento se opõe e, consequentemente, retarda o movimento de ida e volta (a força resultante é menor em ambas as direções). Se houver uma quantidade muito grande de amortecimento, o sistema nem mesmo oscila; em vez disso, ele se move lentamente em direção ao equilíbrio. Em resumo, um sistema sobreamortecido se move lentamente em direção ao equilíbrio, enquanto um sistema subamortecido se move rapidamente em direção ao equilíbrio, mas oscilará em torno do ponto de equilíbrio ao fazê-lo. Por outro lado, um sistema criticamente amortecido se move o mais rápido possível em direção ao equilíbrio, sem oscilar em torno do ponto de equilíbrio.

O amortecimento crítico é muitas vezes desejado, porque tal sistema não apenas retorna rapidamente ao equilíbrio, mas também permanece em equilíbrio. Types of Damping

Damping changes how a system oscillates by reducing its back-and-forth motion. As damping increases, the period and frequency begin to change because damping opposes motion and lowers the net force in both directions.

When damping is very large, the system stops oscillating altogether. It then moves slowly toward equilibrium. An overdamped system reaches equilibrium slowly. An underdamped system reaches equilibrium faster, but it oscillates around the equilibrium point while doing so.

A critically damped system is different. It moves to equilibrium as quickly as possible without overshooting or oscillating. This is often the desired behavior because the system returns to equilibrium rapidly and stays there.

Critical damping is also useful when a constant force creates a new equilibrium position. In that case, the system moves to the new position in the shortest time possible without overshooting. A bathroom scale with a needle gauge is a common example. The needle moves to its equilibrium position and does not keep bouncing around it, which would be inconvenient.

Damping forces can also have different forms. Friction is sometimes independent of velocity. In many other cases, damping depends on velocity, either in complex ways or simply in proportion to velocity.
