Polymers

Um polímero é uma cadeia de pequenas moléculas, chamados monómeros, que são detidos juntos por ligações covalentes. Os organismos podem sintetizar polímeros biológicos, ou os cientistas podem sintetizar os polímeros no laboratório. O termo polímero deriva das palavras Gregas “poly”, que significa “muitos” e “mer”, que significa “partes”. Os polímeros são cadeias longas de moléculas compostas por unidades repetitivas de moléculas menores, conhecidas como monómeros. Ou ocorrem naturalmente, como o DNA e as proteínas, ou podem ser construídos sinteticamente, como os plásticos. Eles apresentam características estruturais variadas, como cadeias lineares, cadeias ramificadas, ou redes complexas, que contribuem para as propriedades que apresentam. Além disso, os grupos funcionais que podem estar presentes em um polímero definem ainda mais as suas propriedades. As unidades individuais de um polímero são mantidas juntas por ligações covalentes estáveis que ocorrem através da polimerização por adição ou por condensação.
Polimerização por Adição
A polimerização por adição ocorre quando os monómeros que participam na reação têm ligações duplas. Esta reação requer a presença de uma molécula externa que tenha um eletrão de valência não emparelhado para iniciar a reação. Este eletrão não emparelhado é altamente reativo e forma uma ligação com uma das ligações duplas em um monómero, o que leva o monómero a ter um eletrão de valência não emparelhado. Este eletrão de valência não emparelhado associa-se então a um outro monómero com ligações duplas que conduzem a uma reação em cadeia onde a molécula continua a adicionar outros monómeros com ligações duplas. Polimerização por Condensação

Polymers are large molecules made from repeating units called monomers. These long chains can form many common materials. Their structure helps explain why different polymers can behave in different ways.
