Types of Potential Energy

Diferentes formas de energia potencial incluem energia potencial gravitacional, elétrica, química, nuclear e elástica.
A energia potencial gravitacional é a forma mais aparente de energia potencial e depende da posição relativa do objeto sob a influência do campo gravitacional. Por exemplo, o livro acima da mesa tem energia potencial gravitacional armazenada nele.
A energia potencial elétrica vem da atração ou repulsão de cargas elétricas, como a energia armazenada dentro de um capacitor em um circuito elétrico na forma de energia potencial elétrica.
A energia potencial química é a energia armazenada nas moléculas. Por exemplo, a madeira seca armazena energia potencial química, que é liberada e convertida em outras formas de energia quando a madeira queima.
A energia potencial nuclear vem do núcleo atômico e a energia potencial elástica é a energia armazenada em um objeto devido à sua configuração, como um estilingue esticado.

Geralmente, objetos ou sistemas com alta energia potencial tendem a ser menos estáveis e, portanto, se movem em direção a níveis de energia mais baixos para atingir a estabilidade. Potential energy is stored energy, and it appears in several everyday forms. It is also called energy at rest because it is ready to be used later. In physics, different systems can store energy in different ways.

Gravitational potential energy is the energy stored by an object because of its position. An apple hanging from a tree is one clear example. Electrical potential energy is stored when electric charges attract or repel each other. Chemical potential energy is stored in the bonds between atoms and molecules.

Potential energy can also be nuclear or elastic. Nuclear energy is stored in an atomic nucleus. Elastic energy is stored when an object changes shape, such as a stretched spring.

Systems with high potential energy are often less stable. They tend to move toward lower energy levels to become more stable. Uranium-235 is one example of this idea. Its unstable nucleus splits into smaller, more stable elements and releases stored nuclear energy. In nuclear power plants, that released energy can be used to generate electricity.

The work-energy theorem can be applied to motion along a curved path. A curved path can be treated as many tiny straight paths added together. On each small part, the force can be taken as constant, so the work-energy theorem can be used there. The total result comes from adding the work done along all of those small path segments.
