Types of Kinetic Energy

A própria energia cinética também existe em diferentes formas - ou seja, energias mecânicas, elétricas, térmicas e radiantes.
Enquanto a energia mecânica é devida ao movimento mecânico de um objeto como um carro em movimento, a energia elétrica é constituída pelo fluxo de cargas elétricas, como visto em relâmpagos. Quando a energia cinética está na forma de ondas eletromagnéticas, como a energia da luz solar, é energia radiante.
A energia térmica é a energia cinética associada ao movimento de átomos e moléculas em um objeto. À medida que os átomos e moléculas dentro de um objeto se movem ou vibram rapidamente e colidem com mais frequência uns com os outros, a temperatura do objeto aumenta. O calor de uma chama ardente é um exemplo de energia térmica.
O oposto acontece quando as vibrações ou movimentos desses átomos e moléculas diminuem. Diz-se então que o objeto é frio e tem baixa energia térmica - como quando a água congela.

A quantidade de energia cinética de um objeto depende de sua massa e velocidade. Considere duas bolas de massas diferentes rolando por uma rampa inclinada com a mesma velocidade. A bola mais pesada terá mais energia cinética. Da mesma forma, quando duas bolas da mesma massa rolam por uma rampa inclinada com velocidades diferentes, a bola que se move mais rápido tem mais energia cinética.

Existem várias formas diferentes de energia cinética, incluindo energia mecânica, elétrica, radiante e térmica. A energia mecânica está associada ao movimento de um objeto. Quanto mais rápido um objeto se move, mais energia mecânica ele possui. Por exemplo, uma bala disparada de uma arma ou a água fluindo em uma represa são exemplos de energia mecânica. A energia elétrica é atribuída ao fluxo de cargas elétricas, como observado no caso de raios durante tempestades ou em circuitos e dispositivos elétricos. A energia radiante é uma forma de energia cinética que se propaga como ondas eletromagnéticas e pode ser experimentada na forma de luz e calor. A luz solar é um exemplo de energia radiante.

A energia térmica está associada ao movimento aleatório de átomos e moléculas. A temperatura é uma medida da energia cinética média das partículas em um objeto. Quando os átomos e moléculas em um objeto se movem ou vibram rapidamente, eles têm uma energia cinética média maior e o objeto tem uma temperatura mais alta. Quando os átomos e moléculas estão se movendo lentamente, eles têm uma energia cinética média menor, e o objeto tem uma temperatura mais baixa. Assim, a energia térmica pode ser observada através das mudanças de temperatura de um objeto. Supondo que nenhuma reação química ou mudança de fase (como derretimento ou vaporização) ocorra, aumentar a quantidade de energia térmica em uma amostra de matéria fará com que sua temperatura aumente. Da mesma forma, diminuir a quantidade de energia térmica em uma amostra de matéria fará com que sua temperatura diminua.

Kinetic energy depends on an object’s mass and speed. A heavier object moving at the same speed has more kinetic energy than a lighter one. An object moving faster also has more kinetic energy when the mass stays the same.

The transcript also describes several forms of kinetic energy. Mechanical energy is linked to the motion of an object. A bullet fired from a gun and water flowing down a dam are examples of mechanical energy.

Electrical energy comes from the flow of electric charges. Lightning during a thunderstorm is one example, and electrical circuits and devices are others. Radiant energy travels as electromagnetic waves and can be experienced as light and heat. Sunlight is an example of radiant energy.

Thermal energy is related to the random motion of atoms and molecules. Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object. When atoms and molecules move or vibrate quickly, the object has a higher average kinetic energy and a higher temperature. When they move more slowly, the average kinetic energy and temperature are lower. If no chemical reaction or phase change occurs, adding thermal energy raises temperature, and removing thermal energy lowers it.
