As forças podem ser classificadas com base na origem como forças de contato e sem contato.
As forças que requerem contato físico entre dois objetos são conhecidas como forças de contato. Forças de atrito, tensão e normal são exemplos de forças de contato.
As forças que podem atuar sobre um objeto sem qualquer contato físico entre o objeto e a fonte são conhecidas como forças sem contato. Forças gravitacionais, magnéticas e eletrostáticas são exemplos de forças sem contato.
Além disso, as forças podem ser classificadas como forças concentradas e distribuídas.
Uma força concentrada é uma força que atua em um ponto específico sobre um objeto, enquanto uma força distribuída atua sobre toda a área de superfície ou volume de um objeto.
A força gravitacional que atua na superfície superior de um corpo é ligeiramente menor do que a força que atua na parte inferior do corpo. Mas, convencionalmente, supõe-se que a força gravitacional atua no centro de gravidade do corpo.

Forças de contato e campo são duas das categorias mais amplamente utilizadas de forças. Como o nome sugere, forças de contato requerem contato físico entre dois objetos para agir um sobre o outro. Exemplos de forças de contato incluem forças de atrito, tensão e normais que surgem devido ao contato de superfícies. Por outro lado, forças de campo podem agir sobre um objeto sem qualquer contato físico entre o objeto e a fonte. Exemplos de forças de campo incluem forças gravitacionais entre corpos celestes, forças magnéticas entre dois ímãs e forças eletrostáticas que causam atração ou repulsão entre partículas carregadas.

Outra forma de classificar as forças é com base na sua distribuição. Uma força concentrada é uma força que age em um ponto específico de um objeto. Um exemplo de força concentrada é um martelo batendo em um prego. Quando o martelo atinge o prego, ele exerce uma força concentrada no ponto de contato entre o martelo e o prego. Por outro lado, forças distribuídas atuam em toda a área de superfície ou volume de um objeto. Essas forças podem ser ainda classificadas como uniformes ou não uniformes, dependendo se a força é a mesma em todos os pontos do objeto. Forces in physics can be grouped by how they act and where they come from. These groups help describe motion, behavior, and equilibrium in the physical world. They are also useful in physics and engineering.

One common way to classify forces is by whether they need contact. Contact forces act only when two objects touch. Frictional force, tension, and normal force are all contact forces that come from surface contact.

Forces can also act without physical touch. These are called non-contact forces. Gravitational force acts between celestial bodies, magnetic force acts between two magnets, and electrostatic force can cause attraction or repulsion between charged particles.

Another way to sort forces is by how they are spread over an object. A concentrated force acts at one specific point. A hammer striking a nail is a clear example because the force is applied at the point of contact.

Distributed forces act over a surface area or through a volume. They may be uniform or non-uniform, depending on whether the force is the same at every point. Examples include the force from a uniform fluid on a body, air resistance on vehicles moving through the air, and the force a person’s hand exerts on a table.

Force classification matters in mechanical engineering. It helps engineers understand and predict how structures and machines respond to different loads.
