Se um sistema é mantido por um número mínimo de restrições para garantir o equilíbrio, diz-se que ele é estaticamente determinado.
Para tal sistema, os suportes de reação desconhecidos podem ser estimados usando equações de equilíbrio.
Se suportes redundantes adicionais forem adicionados ao sistema para manter o equilíbrio, ele se tornará estaticamente indeterminado. Isso significa que o número de restrições que atuam no sistema é maior do que o número de equações de equilíbrio disponíveis para sua solução.
Por outro lado, considere uma barra AB conectada a dois apoios de pinos nos pontos C e D, de modo que as linhas de ação das forças reativas sejam concorrentes no ponto C.

Constraints and Statical Determinacy

Na engenharia estrutural, o equilíbrio de um sistema não é determinado apenas por suas equações de equilíbrio, mas também com a ajuda de restrições. Restrições se referem a restrições no movimento de um sistema. As combinações adequadas de restrições podem minimizar o número total de restrições necessárias para manter um sistema em equilíbrio mecânico. Quando isso acontece, o sistema é dito ser estaticamente determinado. Para esses sistemas, as reações de suporte desconhecidas podem ser estimadas usando equações de equilíbrio.

Sistemas estaticamente determinados são os mais fáceis de analisar e projetar, pois todas as forças que atuam no sistema podem ser determinadas usando um número específico de equações de equilíbrio. Constraints in structural engineering control how a body can move and help keep it in mechanical equilibrium. A constraint is a restriction on motion. When the right number of constraints is used, the system can stay balanced with the fewest supports needed.

A system with the proper number of supports is called statically determinate. In that case, the unknown reaction forces can be found from equations of equilibrium. These systems are the easiest to analyze and design because the forces can be solved from a fixed set of equilibrium equations.

The usual equilibrium equations include the sum of all forces equal to zero and the sum of all moments equal to zero. If extra, redundant supports are added, the system becomes statically indeterminate. That means there are more constraints than equilibrium equations, so the extra reactions cannot be found from equilibrium alone.

For statically indeterminate systems, the extra equations usually come from deformation. This topic is handled in mechanics of materials. The main challenge is choosing the correct number of redundant supports so the structure stays in equilibrium without becoming overconstrained.

Improper constraints can also create instability. This happens when all reactive forces meet at a single point, pass through a common axis, or become parallel. In those cases, the structure may topple or fail to stay balanced, so engineers avoid these conditions in practice.
