A eletroquímica envolve o uso de grandezas elétricas para analisar reações químicas.

A oxidação é a perda de elétrons de uma substância, enquanto a redução se refere ao ganho de elétrons. Uma substância com forte afinidade eletrônica é chamada de agente oxidante (oxidante), e um agente redutor (redutor) é uma espécie que doa elétrons. Os processos de oxidação e redução são essenciais para as reações eletroquímicas, que podem ser melhor compreendidas por meio de semi-reações.

Quando os elétrons fluem por um circuito elétrico, a corrente medida e a voltagem da célula podem revelar informações sobre o tipo de reação. Electrochemistry connects electrical measurements with chemical reactions, especially oxidation and reduction. It focuses on how electron movement helps explain reaction behavior.

Oxidation is the loss of electrons from a substance, and reduction is the gain of electrons. A species with strong electron affinity is an oxidizing agent, or oxidant. A species that donates electrons is a reducing agent, or reductant. These redox steps are often described with half-reactions.

When electrons move through an electric circuit, the measured current and cell voltage can reveal the type of reaction taking place. In electrochemical reactions, current is proportional to the reaction rate. Voltage is proportional to the free energy change for the reaction.

Ohm's law also helps explain these measurements. It shows that current is inversely proportional to circuit resistance and directly proportional to the applied potential. By changing potential or current, electrochemical experiments can determine free energy change and reaction rates. These methods also use inexpensive instruments, which is an advantage over many other analytical techniques.
