A voltametria cíclica investiga a propriedade redox de um sistema químico por meio de uma célula eletroquímica.
Esta célula compreende eletrodos de trabalho, referência e contra-eletrodos imersos em um eletrólito contendo o analito de interesse.
Uma forma de onda de potencial triangular é aplicada ao eletrodo de trabalho, varrendo o potencial entre um valor inicial, um potencial de vértice e de volta ao valor inicial.
O potencial começa em um valor inicial em que não ocorre reação redox e, em seguida, passa para um valor em que o analito sofre redução ou oxidação na superfície do eletrodo de trabalho.
O potencial é então revertido e varrido de volta ao seu valor inicial, permitindo que a reação reversa ocorra.
A corrente medida a partir da reação redox plotada em relação ao potencial produz um voltamograma cíclico com dois picos distintos: um pico anódico para oxidação e um pico catódico para redução.

A configuração para a voltametria cíclica normalmente consiste em um eletrodo de trabalho, um eletrodo de referência e um contra eletrodo — todos imersos em uma solução eletrolítica. O eletrodo de trabalho é onde a reação redox de interesse ocorre, enquanto o eletrodo de referência fornece uma referência de potencial estável, e o contra eletrodo completa o circuito para o fluxo de corrente.

O processo começa definindo um potencial inicial no eletrodo de trabalho, geralmente no ponto onde nenhuma reação eletroquímica ocorre. Cyclic voltammetry measures how current changes as the potential at an electrode is varied. It is used to study the redox properties of a chemical species, meaning how easily it is oxidized or reduced.

The setup uses three electrodes in an electrolyte solution. The working electrode is where the redox reaction of interest takes place. The reference electrode provides a stable potential, and the counter electrode completes the circuit for current flow.

The process starts at a chosen initial potential, usually one where no electrochemical reaction occurs. The potential is then increased in a straight line to a preset value. After that, the sweep is reversed and moved back toward the starting point.

When the applied potential reaches a level that drives a reaction at the electrode surface, current begins to flow. The graph produced is called a cyclic voltammogram. It plots current against applied potential and shows anodic and cathodic peaks, which represent oxidation and reduction, respectively.
