Work Done Over an Inclined Plane

Considere uma pessoa esquiando em uma encosta. Supondo que a força devido ao atrito nos esquis seja insignificante sobre o gelo, um diagrama de corpo livre pode ser desenhado.
O componente da força gravitacional ao longo do deslocamento move a pessoa para frente. As forças perpendiculares ao deslocamento não têm papel no movimento e, portanto, não contribuem para o trabalho realizado.
Portanto, o trabalho realizado é simplesmente o componente de força paralela multiplicado pelo deslocamento.
Outra maneira de resolver isso é usando o vetor de força em vez de seu componente. 
Aqui, o ângulo entre a força e o deslocamento é considerado. Observe que a expressão final para o trabalho realizado é a mesma.
No entanto, se o deslocamento do esquiador for na direção oposta da força, de modo que comece e termine em repouso, o trabalho realizado é negativo.

A estrutura conceitual do centro de massa ajuda a descrever facilmente o trabalho realizado em corpos rígidos. Já que as forças internas em um corpo rígido não realizam trabalho, elas podem ser ignoradas, e as forças externas podem ser consideradas no teorema trabalho-energia.

O trabalho realizado pela gravidade para mover um corpo rígido, ou o trabalho realizado por uma força contrária para mover um corpo rígido contra a gravidade, pode ser calculado utilizando a ideia de centro de massa. Este trabalho é a integral de linha da força da gravidade ao longo do percurso, considerada positiva se a gravidade aumentar a energia cinética do corpo rígido e negativa se for realizado trabalho contra a gravidade para levantá-lo, diminuindo assim sua energia cinética. No caso do movimento horizontal, o trabalho realizado pela gravidade, ou contra ela, é zero. Ou seja, a mudança na energia cinética de um corpo, mesmo que não-nula, é totalmente devida a outras forças.

A formulação se mantém a mesma quando um corpo se move sobre um plano inclinado. A única diferença é que apenas um componente da gravidade está ao longo do plano, e apenas esse componente precisa ser considerado ao calcular o trabalho realizado. A força gravitacional normal ao plano não realiza trabalho em nenhum momento durante o deslocamento.

Gravity and work on sloped motion can be described with the center-of-mass framework. For a rigid body, internal forces do no work, so they can be ignored. The work-energy theorem then uses only the external forces.

The work done by gravity depends on the path of the body’s center of mass. If gravity helps increase kinetic energy, the work is positive. If an object is lifted against gravity, the work is negative because kinetic energy decreases.

For horizontal motion, the work done by or against gravity is zero. In that case, any change in kinetic energy comes from other forces. The same idea applies to motion over an inclined plane.

On a slope, only the component of gravity parallel to the plane contributes to work. The force perpendicular to the plane does no work during the motion. That is the key difference from horizontal motion and other straight paths.
