Conservation of Mechanical Energy

Considere um pneu balançando como um pêndulo para frente e para trás sob a influência da força gravitacional. O sistema pêndulo-Terra é considerado um sistema isolado.
À medida que o pêndulo oscila, a energia do sistema varia para frente e para trás entre a energia potencial gravitacional e a energia cinética, enquanto a energia mecânica do sistema - a soma das duas - permanece constante.
Quando o pêndulo está em sua posição mais baixa, está em sua velocidade máxima e toda a energia é energia cinética. Em sua posição mais alta, onde o pêndulo pára momentaneamente, a velocidade é zero e toda a energia é energia potencial.

A energia mecânica E de um sistema é a soma de sua energia potencial U e da energia cinética K dos objetos que fazem parte dele. O que acontece com essa energia mecânica quando apenas forças conservativas causam transferências de energia dentro do sistema - ou seja, quando forças de atrito e arrasto não atuam nos objetos do sistema? Além disso, suponha que o sistema esteja isolado de seu ambiente, ou seja, nenhuma força externa de um objeto fora do sistema causa mudanças de energia dentro do sistema.

Quando uma força conservativa realiza trabalho W em um objeto dentro de um sistema, essa força transfere energia entre a energia cinética K do objeto e a energia potencial U do sistema. Em um sistema isolado, onde apenas forças conservativas causam mudanças de energia, a energia cinética e a energia potencial podem mudar; no entanto, a soma delas, a energia mecânica E do sistema, não pode mudar. Esse resultado é chamado de princípio da conservação de energia mecânica.

O princípio da conservação da energia mecânica nos permite resolver problemas que seriam difíceis de resolver usando apenas as leis de Newton. Quando a energia mecânica de um sistema é conservada, a soma da energia cinética e da energia potencial em um determinado instante pode ser relacionada à sua soma em outro instante sem haver a necessidade de se encontrar o trabalho realizado pelas forças envolvidas. Uma grande vantagem de usar a conservação de energia em vez das leis de Newton do movimento é que é possível ir do estado inicial ao estado final sem considerar todo o movimento intermediário.

Mechanical energy in an isolated system is the total of kinetic energy and potential energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, and potential energy is stored energy. The transcript focuses on what happens when energy shifts within a system without outside influence.

In this case, only conservative forces act on the objects in the system. Conservative forces can transfer energy between kinetic energy and potential energy. Friction and drag do not act here, and no external force from outside the system changes the energy inside it.

When a conservative force does work on an object, it changes how the energy is shared between kinetic and potential forms. The kinetic energy and potential energy can each change. However, their sum, called the mechanical energy E, does not change.

This result is known as the principle of conservation of mechanical energy. It is useful for solving problems that are hard to handle with Newton’s laws alone. Instead of tracking every step of the motion, you can compare the initial and final states and relate the total mechanical energy at one instant to the total at another.
