Work Done by Many Forces

Considere um trator de bagagem puxando um carrinho de bagagem com uma força de 10.000 N em um ângulo de 30 graus. Se o carrinho oferece um atrito de 2.000 N ao ser rebocado, qual é o trabalho feito no carrinho para deslocá-lo em 10 m em linha reta?
Um diagrama de corpo livre é desenhado para obter uma compreensão clara das forças.
As forças perpendiculares ao movimento do carrinho não causam deslocamento do carrinho, portanto, nenhum trabalho é feito por essas forças. 
As forças na direção x são o componente da força de tração e da força de atrito, que são somadas vetorialmente.
O trabalho total realizado é a força resultante ao longo do deslocamento vezes o deslocamento.
Alternativamente, o trabalho realizado por cada força pode ser primeiro calculado e depois somado.
O trabalho realizado pelas forças perpendiculares é zero. A força de tração e a força de atrito não são perpendiculares ao deslocamento e, portanto, contribuem para o trabalho total.

O trabalho total realizado em um objeto que sofre o efeito de múltiplas forças pode ser calculado usando dois métodos que fornecem o mesmo resultado. Em um método, o trabalho realizado por cada força é calculado primeiramente. Então, esses valores são somados algebricamente para calcular o trabalho total realizado por todas as forças. No segundo método, a força resultante é calculada por uma soma vetorial de todas as forças, e então o trabalho realizado por essa força é obtido.

Uma vez que as forças perpendiculares ao deslocamento não realizam trabalho, elas não contribuem para o trabalho realizado no objeto. Elas podem ser simplesmente ignoradas no cálculo pelo primeiro método. No entanto, no segundo método, elas precisam ser inicialmente consideradas ao se calcular o vetor da força resultante, e somente então a sua contribuição é determinada como sendo zero.

Se forem aplicadas forças mutuamente opostas ao centro de massa do objeto, elas contribuem com trabalhos diferentes, positivos e negativos, no primeiro método. Através da soma algébrica, o trabalho total realizado no objeto é encontrado como sendo positivo ou negativo, dependendo de qual das forças é maior em magnitude. Work-Energy Along Curved Paths

The work-energy theorem can be applied to motion along a curved path. A curved path can be treated as many tiny straight paths added together.
