Work Done by Gravity

Quando um objeto é lançado para cima, a força gravitacional atua contra seu deslocamento.
Assim, o trabalho realizado pela força gravitacional é o produto escalar da força gravitacional e dos vetores de deslocamento.
Como esses vetores apontam em direções opostas, o trabalho realizado é negativo.
A força gravitacional funciona no objeto transformando a energia cinética dos objetos em energia potencial.
Depois de atingir a altura máxima, o objeto cai para trás. A força gravitacional atua na direção do deslocamento, e o trabalho realizado é positivo.
Suponha que um objeto seja levantado, tanto a força aplicada quanto a força gravitacional funcionam no objeto.
O trabalho líquido feito no objeto é dado pelo teorema da energia do trabalho.
Se o objeto estiver estacionário antes e depois de uma elevação, a mudança líquida na energia cinética é zero.
Assim, o trabalho realizado pela força aplicada é negativo do trabalho realizado pela força gravitacional.

A gravitação é uma das quatro forças fundamentais na natureza. A força entre objetos na Terra e a própria Terra é chamada de gravidade.

Assim como outras forças, a gravidade realiza trabalho em um objeto quando o desloca em direção ao centro da Terra. Nesse caso, o trabalho realizado pela gravidade é considerado como positivo. Se uma força externa age sobre o objeto contra a atração da gravidade e consegue elevá-lo longe do centro da Terra, trabalho é realizado contra a gravidade. Nesse caso, o trabalho líquido realizado é considerado como negativo. Se um objeto se movimenta ao longo da Terra e não tem deslocamento tanto na direção do centro da Terra quanto na direção oposta, então nenhum trabalho é realizado pela, ou contra, a gravidade.

É claro que nenhum objeto na Terra é uma partícula. O conceito de centro de massa, desenvolvido no estudo de objetos compostos, contorna esse problema. Uma única partícula de massa igual à massa total do objeto pode ser considerada presente no centro de massa do objeto antes de considerar o efeito de forças externas, incluindo a gravidade.

Gravity is one of the four fundamental forces in nature. On Earth, the force between an object and Earth is called gravity. Gravity does work on an object when it moves the object toward Earth’s center. In that case, the work done by gravity is positive.

When an external force lifts an object away from Earth’s center, that force works against gravity. The net work done in this case is negative. If an object moves along the Earth with no change in distance toward or away from Earth’s center, then gravity does no work on it.

Real objects are not particles, so physics often uses the center of mass framework for composite objects. This method treats the whole object as a single particle with the same total mass located at its center of mass. It makes it easier to analyze external forces, including gravity.

Work-Energy Along Curved Paths

The work-energy theorem can be applied to motion along a curved path. A curved path can be treated as many tiny straight paths added together. On each small part, the force can be taken as constant, so the work-energy theorem can be used there. The total result comes from adding the work done along all of those small path segments.
