O amplificador inversor conecta a tensão de entrada através de um resistor ao terminal inversor, aterra o terminal não inversor e possui um resistor de feedback entre os terminais inversor e de saída.
Ao aplicar KCL e assumir que o amplificador operacional é ideal, a expressão de ganho é determinada.
Os amplificadores inversores invertem a polaridade do sinal de entrada enquanto o amplificam, tornando-os úteis para cancelamento de ruído.
O microfone seleciona o sinal de ruído de entrada e inverte o sinal no circuito de cancelamento para eliminar o ruído.
Os amplificadores operacionais invertidos têm aplicações no processamento de áudio para amplificação, conversão e filtragem de sinal.
Os amplificadores não inversores têm a tensão de entrada aplicada diretamente ao terminal não inversor, um resistor entre o terra e o terminal inversor e um resistor para feedback negativo.
A aplicação de KCL no terminal inversor e a substituição dos valores de tensão fornecem uma expressão para o ganho de tensão.

Em um amplificador inversor, a tensão de entrada é conectada através de um resistor ao terminal inversor. Enquanto isso, o terminal não inversor é aterrado e um resistor de feedback é estabelecido entre o terminal inversor e o terminal de saída, conforme mostrado na Figura 1.

O objetivo é discernir a relação entre a tensão de entrada (vi) e a tensão de saída (vo). Aplicando a Lei das Correntes de Kirchhoff (LCK) e presumindo que o amplificador operacional seja ideal, obtém-se a expressão do ganho. Um amplificador inversor tem a capacidade de inverter a polaridade do sinal de entrada e, ao mesmo tempo, amplificá-lo. Vale ressaltar que o ganho depende exclusivamente dos elementos externos conectados ao amplificador operacional, sendo o ganho a resistência de realimentação dividida pela resistência de entrada.

Outra aplicação crítica do amplificador operacional é vista no amplificador não inversor, conforme ilustrado na Figura 2.

Aqui, a tensão de entrada (vi) é aplicada diretamente no terminal de entrada não inversor, enquanto o resistor R é conectado entre o terra e o terminal inversor. O foco aqui está na tensão de saída e no ganho de tensão. A aplicação da LCK no terminal inversor e a substituição dos valores de tensão fornece uma expressão para o ganho de tensão. Se o resistor de feedback entrar em curto-circuito ou se o resistor de entrada estiver em circuito aberto, o ganho se transforma em unidade, formando um seguidor de tensão ou amplificador de ganho unitário. Tal circuito possui uma alta impedância de entrada, tornando-o útil como amplificador de estágio intermediário (ou buffer) para segregar um circuito do outro.

Operational amplifiers can be used as inverting, noninverting, and buffer amplifiers. In these circuits, the output voltage depends on the input voltage and the resistor setup around the op-amp.

In an inverting amplifier, the input voltage is sent through a resistor to the inverting terminal. The non-inverting terminal is grounded, and a feedback resistor links the inverting terminal to the output. Using Kirchhoff's Current Law and an ideal op-amp model, the gain can be found. This circuit reverses the polarity of the input signal while also amplifying it. The gain depends on the external resistors, and it is the feedback resistance divided by the input resistance.

A noninverting amplifier works differently. The input voltage is applied directly to the non-inverting terminal. A resistor is placed between the ground and the inverting terminal, and the feedback path helps determine the output voltage and voltage gain. Applying Kirchhoff's Current Law at the inverting terminal gives the gain expression.

If the feedback resistor is short-circuited or the input resistor is open-circuited, the gain becomes unity. This creates a voltage follower, also called a unity gain amplifier. Because it has high input impedance, this type of circuit is useful as a buffer that separates one circuit from another.
