Grandezas vetoriais são grandezas físicas com magnitude e direção.
Magnitude é o tamanho ou quantidade de uma quantidade, e a direção é a orientação no espaço.
Por exemplo, para abrir uma porta, uma certa quantidade de força é aplicada em uma direção específica. Portanto, a força é uma quantidade vetorial.
O peso de qualquer objeto, que é a força exercida sobre um corpo devido à gravidade, é uma grandeza vetorial.
Os vetores são representados como letras em itálico em negrito com uma seta acima deles. A magnitude é indicada com o mesmo símbolo vetorial entre barras verticais ou usando letras em itálico.
Geometricamente, os vetores são mostrados usando uma linha com uma seta apontando sua direção e comprimento indicando sua magnitude.
O deslocamento de um objeto dos pontos A para B é mostrado com uma seta originada em A e terminando em B e o vetor é denotado como vetor DAB.

Dois vetores são iguais se tiverem a mesma magnitude e direção.
O negativo de um vetor é obtido invertendo sua direção.
Se dois vetores apontam na mesma direção, eles são paralelos. Se eles apontam em direções opostas, eles são antiparalelos.

Grandezas físicas especificadas completamente com um número de unidades (magnitude) e uma direção são chamadas de grandezas vetoriais. Exemplos de grandezas vetoriais incluem deslocamento, velocidade, posição, força e torque. Na linguagem da matemática, as grandezas vetoriais físicas são representadas por objetos matemáticos chamados vetores. Denotamos grandezas vetoriais por uma letra em itálico com uma seta acima dela. Uma grandeza com apenas magnitude, mas sem direção, é uma grandeza escalar. Portanto, peso é uma grandeza vetorial, enquanto massa é uma grandeza escalar. Da mesma forma, velocidade escalar (speed em inglês) é uma grandeza escalar, enquanto velocidade é uma grandeza vetorial.

Suponha que você conte a um amigo em um acampamento que descobriu um ótimo ponto de pesca a 6 km da sua barraca. É improvável que seu amigo consiga encontrar facilmente esse ponto, a menos que você também forneça a direção na qual ele pode ser encontrado a partir do seu acampamento. Você pode dizer, por exemplo, "Ande cerca de 6 km na direção nordeste a partir da minha barraca". O conceito principal aqui é que você precisa fornecer duas informações, ou seja, a distância, ou magnitude, (6 km) e a direção (nordeste). Uma mudança de posição, como da barraca até o ponto de pesca, neste exemplo, é conhecida como deslocamento. Isso é um exemplo de uma grandeza vetorial. Dois vetores são iguais se, e somente se, eles tiverem magnitudes iguais e a mesma direção.
