Agora, suponha que um objeto se mova em relação a um quadro de referência - por exemplo, um carro se move para a esquerda em relação a um prédio e, em seguida, a posição do carro muda. Essa mudança de posição é chamada de deslocamento.
No entanto, o valor numérico de x ao longo de uma linha reta define a posição de um objeto onde ele pode estar localizado. Qualquer mudança de posição ao longo desta linha é indicada pelo deslocamento, onde Δx é o deslocamento e é calculado subtraindo a posição inicial da posição final. Por exemplo, um lançamento de foguete pode ser descrito em termos da posição do foguete em relação à Terra como um todo. Por outro lado, a posição de um ciclista pode ser descrita em termos de onde ele está em relação aos prédios pelos quais ele passa. Em outros casos, usamos referenciais que não são estacionários, mas estão em movimento em relação à Terra. Para descrever a posição de uma pessoa em um avião, por exemplo, usamos o avião, e não a Terra, como referencial. Para descrever a posição de um objeto em movimento unidimensional, frequentemente usamos a variável x.

Se um objeto se move em relação a um referencial, então a posição do objeto muda. Por exemplo, se um professor se move para a direita em relação a um quadro branco, então a posição do professor mudou. Essa mudança de posição é chamada de deslocamento. A palavra deslocamento implica que um objeto tenha se movido ou tenha sido deslocado. Embora a posição seja o valor numérico de x ao longo de uma linha reta onde um objeto possa ser localizado, o deslocamento representa a mudança na posição ao longo dessa linha. Como o deslocamento indica direção, o deslocamento é uma grandeza vetorial, podendo ser positivo ou negativo, dependendo da direção escolhida como positiva.

Além disso, uma análise de movimento pode ter vários deslocamentos incorporados nela. Por exemplo, se a direita for positiva e um objeto se mover 2 m para a direita e, depois, 4 m para a esquerda, os deslocamentos individuais são de 2 m e -4 m, respectivamente. O deslocamento é representado por Δx, que é a mudança na posição. Sempre resolvemos o deslocamento subtraindo a posição inicial da posição final.
