A revolução da lua ao redor da Terra indica a presença de uma força que a atrai para o centro da órbita.
Issac Newton propôs que essa força atrativa é a mesma que puxa uma maçã em direção ao chão.
Foi uma ideia revolucionária, já que se acreditava que objetos celestes e objetos na Terra seguiam regras diferentes.
A lua leva 27,3 dias para orbitar a Terra. Considerando a distância média até a lua, sua aceleração pode ser estimada. 
A razão entre a aceleração lunar e a aceleração de um objeto caindo na Terra indica que a aceleração é inversamente proporcional à distância ao quadrado.
Como a força é massa vezes aceleração, a força gravitacional é diretamente proporcional à massa e inversamente proporcional à distância ao quadrado.
Observando que a aceleração dos planetas diminui inversamente com sua distância do Sol, Newton previu que a força gravitacional atua entre o Sol, os planetas e suas luas.
Estendendo esse argumento a todos os objetos do universo, Newton formulou a lei da gravitação universal.

Nos anos anteriores a Newton, existia a crença geral de que leis diferentes governavam objetos no céu e os objetos na Terra. Quando Kepler escreveu as três leis do movimento planetário, explicando em detalhes as propriedades geométricas das órbitas planetárias ao redor do Sol, não havia uma ideia imediata de fazer uma conexão com leis mais fundamentais. Foi Isaac Newton quem, em 1665-1666, descobriu a conexão entre o movimento planetário, o movimento da lua ao redor da Terra e o fenômeno cotidiano de objetos caindo na superfície da Terra. Esse fenômeno universal é conhecido atualmente como gravitação.

Embora pareça comum hoje em dia, a afirmação de que o mesmo fenômeno governa o movimento de objetos na Terra e o movimento da lua ao redor da Terra foi revolucionária nos tempos de Newton. Ele descobriu que a aceleração centrípeta da lua ao redor da Terra e a aceleração devido à gravidade são inversamente proporcionais ao quadrado da distância do objeto em relação à Terra. Como a aceleração é independente da massa, de acordo com suas leis do movimento, a força aplicada deve ser então proporcional à massa. Essa percepção o levou a formular a lei da gravitação que leva seu nome.

Outra informação necessária para completar a lei da gravitação de Newton era a constante gravitacional, que foi obtida experimentalmente. O primeiro experimento bem-sucedido para medir a constante foi realizado por Henry Cavendish. Uma vez que o valor dessa constante foi conhecido, junto com as leis do movimento de Newton, as leis do movimento planetário de Kepler puderam ser derivadas.
